Siemens AG, Industrial and Building Systems, will provide the drive system for the complete paper machine and finishing equipment. At a production speed of 5,900 fpm, the new paper machine will be the world's fastest. The total installed load with 40 drives will be 28,900 hp for the paper machine and 4,400 hp for the winders. Startup for the new production line is scheduled for spring 1998.
With engineering assistance from Simon Holder Ltd., Lincoln Pulp & Paper Co. has upgraded the stock and water systems for paper machines No. 4 and No. 5 and for tissue machine No. 7 at its Lincoln, Maine, mill. NEW TECHNOLOGY

Solv-Ex and Raisio test new, high-performance pigment

Solv-Ex Corp. and Raisio Chemicals Oy recently announced that the two companies have formed an alliance for further testing and market evaluation of a new product developed by Solv-Ex for use in the paper industry. The focus of work will be on the use of the product as a specialty pigment for coatings and fillers. Produced from fine clays found in the oil sands of Northern Alberta's Athabasca region, the new product is a synthetic mineral with properties similar to high-value titanium dioxide.

Solv-Ex reports that product development has been underway for almost a year, and that early product tests have been very encouraging. In laboratory and papermaking trials at an industry pilot plant, the new pigment showed excellent performance as a filler in both woodfree and mechanical printing papers under both alkaline and acid papermaking conditions.

In one of these preliminary tests, the new Solv-Ex filler, designated TiO2-S, was compared for brightness contributions against filler content with precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). In the uncoated woodfree sheets, TiO2-S performed better than PCC and showed excellent results when compared to the more expensive TiO2.

Since the alliance with Raisio includes an aggressive development schedule, Solv-Ex expects an acceleration toward commercial production if testing proceeds in line with expectations.

For its Port Hawkesbury, N.S., mill, Stora Forest Industries Ltd. recently ordered equipment from Valmet Automation and Siemens AG for a new supercalendered production line, featuring a Valmet paper machine, two winders, two supercalenders, two slitter winders, and a rewinder. The automation includes a stock preparation system, machine flow controls, and paper machine logic completely integrated into a Damatic XDi system. A training system as well as system engineering, startup, and maintenance services is included in the automation contract. Valmet Automation will also provide an automation package for two TMP lines at the plant.
Rock Tenn Co.'s corrugated plant in Gallatin, Tenn., was recently approved for ISO 9001 registration by Lloyd's Registrar Quality Assurance Ltd.
The new bleached board division's manufacturing, sales, marketing, and technology teams created after International Paper's recent merger with Federal Paper Board have increased productivity within the division's mill system by 160 tpd. International Paper, with five bleached board mills in Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas, formed the task teams, comprised of International Paper and former Federal employees, as a way to make more products with consistent quality available to customers.
