U.S. production of paper and paperboard continued to rise in February from a year ago, according to the American Forest & Paper Assn. The seasonally unadjusted rate of production reached 91.895 mtpy, up 8.3% from last year. Paper production for the month was up 9.1% from year-ago numbers to 43.398 mtpy on a seasonally unadjusted basis, while paperboard output increased 7.5% to 48.497 mtpy.
Among major grades (on an annualized year-to-date basis) coated paper shipments were up 17.5% from a year ago, newsprint production rose 3.8%, and tissue was up 1.6%. Most grades continued to rise in February, but unbleached kraft liner fell 3.5% over February 1996. Total packaging and other papers were up 5.3% when compared with last year. Both U.S. market pulp and total woodpulp production were up from last year, 4.7% and 1.5%, respectively.
Canadian newsprint shipments totaled 595,000 m. tons in February, down 9.8% from February 1996, but up 5.8% from January 1997. Newsprint mills operated at 98% of capacity. Canadian woodpulp shipments were up 24.8% from February 1996 and reached 1.6 million mtons for the year-to-date, with mills operating at 97% of capacity in February.
