PAPER INDUSTRY HALL OF FAME
TO INDUCT SEVEN NEW MEMBERS

The Paper Industry Hall of Fame (PIHF) honors committee and board of directors have announced that seven inductees will be recognized at the third annual awards ceremony on Thurs., Oct. 2, 1997, at the Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis. George P. Mueller, PIHF chairman, will serve as master of ceremonies for the event, and John A. Luke, Jr., chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Westvaco Corp., New York, N.Y., will be the keynote speaker.

PIHF honors individuals, living or deceased, who have been instrumental in helping the world's paper industry grow. Recognition is based on contributions in the areas of technology, economics, leadership, academics, service, marketing, and research and development.

The 1997 roster of inductees includes the following representatives from Korea, Finland, and the United States:

William E. Buchanan (deceased), former chairman of the board, Albany International Corp. Buchanan successfully transformed Appleton Wire Works from a small regional supplier of fourdrinier wires in the 1920s to a large, successful manufacturer of forming fabrics. Subsequently, Appleton Wire Works and Albany Felt Co. merged to become Albany International.

Edgar Justus (deceased), founder of Beloit Corp. Justus is recognized for his significant contributions to the technological advancements in paper machine design and performance that have resulted in simpler, energy-saving equipment that can be operated at higher speeds with improved sheet quality. His efforts have produced innovations in headboxes, forming, pressing, drying, calendering, winding, coating, drives, controls, and systems for application to new and existing paper and board machines. Prior to his retirement in 1984, Justus directed Beloit Corp.'s worldwide research and development programs in pulp, stock, and papermaking technology.

Dr. Milos Krofta, founder of Krofta Engineering Corp., Krofta Waters, Inc., and eight other Krofta corporations worldwide. Krofta was an early and ardent proponent of recycling water in paper mills. Fiber efficiency and water use significantly changed when mills began applying his flotation saveall in 1947. Beginning in the 1960s, his clarifying units were used in the first "zero discharge" paper mills.

Jong Dae Lee, former president and chief executive officer, YuHan-Kimberly Ltd., Korea. Lee joined YuHan Corp. in 1967 and is credited with the resulting formation of the joint venture YuHan-Kimberly, Ltd. Under his leadership, the company has become the largest tissue and personal care company in Korea, with sales in excess of $400 million. Lee personally designed and supervised the building of YuHan-Kimberly's first paper machine winder from material salvaged in the aftermath of the Korean War. He built and marketed smaller-scale and lower-cost tissue machines that are based on Kimberly-Clark crescent former technology, and which are for sale in third world developing countries.

Dr. Philip Nethercut, former executive director of the Technical Association for the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI). Nethercut served as the executive director of TAPPI from 1957 until his retirement in 1986. Under his leadership, TAPPI's membership expanded threefold, programs and services grew, and the organization became a leader in education and information exchange for the global pulp and paper industry.

Dr. Niilo Ryti, associate professor of paper technology at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. As a professor, Ryti has been instrumental in producing qualified paper engineers, thus contributing significantly to the development of the paper industry. Through research, he developed pulp characterization methods, the first mill-scale integrated groundwood mill control system, and methods for analyzing the stability of paper machines. In addition, pioneering work on the application of radioactive tracing techniques for analyzing the performance of refiners and pulp tanks was performed under his leadership.

Dr. Lawrence Sanford, associate director of research and development, Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co. Sanford revolutionized the way low-density paper is made by developing the "blow-through-drying" process, which was commercialized in the 1970s and changed the platform of competition for tissue and towel consumer products by providing softness and absorbency in Procter & Gamble's Charmin and Bounty brands. Through his efforts, Procter & Gamble's leadership in the tissue business was solidified, and the process accounted for over $2 billion in annual sales.

Nomination forms for 1998 are now available from The Paper Industry Hall of Fame. Candidates may be nominated at any time during the year for consideration by the honors committee of the PIHF board of directors. For more information, write to The Paper Industry Hall of Fame, P.O.
