ACQUISITIONS/MERGERS

Degussa Corp., Ridgefield Park, N.J., and E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co., Wilmington, Del., have announced Degussa's intent to acquire DuPont's worldwide hydrogen peroxide business. This business includes hydrogen peroxide manufacturing facilities in Memphis, Tenn., Maitland, Ont., and Gibbons, Alta. DuPont's interests in joint ventures in New Zealand and Indonesia are included, subject to joint venture approvals.

Garlock Metallic Gaskets, a business unit of Garlock Sealing Technologies, has purchased Signum Manufacturing Co. from Virginia Sealing Products Inc. Signum produces spiral-wound gaskets used in the nuclear power industry, chemical plants, and the production of valves.

Victaulic Company of America has acquired the Aquamine Div. of John Boyle & Co. Inc., Bristol, Tenn. The division produces Aquamine-a high-impact, reusable PVC system of pipe, couplings, fittings, and accessories with an easy slide-in spline assembly mechanism. Typical applications include sludge and slurry lines, acid waste lines, and temporary water by-pass lines.

Sequa Corp., a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and web offset printing equipment, has signed an agreement with W.R. Grace & Co. under which Sequa will purchase TEC Systems, DePere, Wis., from Grace. TEC Systems is a manufacturer of dryers and environmental control equipment for paper, printing, and other industrial applications.

Westronics Inc. has acquired Angus Electronics, formerly Esterline Angus, from Esterline Technologies. Angus Electronics, Indianapolis, Ind., is a manufacturer of process and power measurement and recording instruments. Angus Electronics is also considered a pioneer in the paperless, videographic recorder market.

Leripa Kunststoff & Co. KG, Oepping, Austria, has purchased a controlling interest in Fox Leripa LLC, Kaukana, Wis. The Coldwater Group, Atlanta, Ga., is Leripa's partner in the company, and Fox Leripa will now be known as Leripa Coldwater LLC. In addition, the current Kaukana facility is moving to Kimberly, Wis., and a second facility in Atlanta will be opening to provide improved service for mills in the Southern U.S.

Cansolv Technologies Inc., Montreal, Que., has purchased Union Carbide Corp.'s system sulfur dioxide (SO2) scrubbing technology in an employee buyout led by the inventor of the process, Dr. Leo Hakka. The newly formed process development and licensing company will market the technology internationally and will develop allied technologies.

Invincible AirFlow Systems, Baltic, Ohio, a manufacturer of industrial vacuum and blower systems has acquired Cat Vac Inc., Algonquin, Ill. Cat Vac manufactures a line of intermittent- and continuos-duty vacuums designed with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters as standard equipment.

Standard Automation has acquired the ControlPlus product line (formerly marketed as Process-5 and Process-M) from Advanced Systems Technology Inc. ControlPlus is process control engineering and management software with full distributed control system functionality.

Avis Industrial Corp., Upland, Ind., has acquired Sellick Equipment Ltd., Harrow, Ont. The addition of the Sellick lift truck line complements Avis's off-road, heavy equipment and railroad equipment lines.

NDC Systems, a supplier of online measurement and control systems for web process industries, has been acquired by Fairey Group plc. The U.K.-based Fairey Group owns businesses in the fields of process technology, industrial electronics, and specialized engineering.

REORGANIZATIONS

In a renewed commitment to grow its industrial automation business in the U.S., Yokogawa Electric Corp., Tokyo, Japan, has announced that is has take sole ownership of its U.S. operation formerly known as Johnson Yokogawa Corp. The new company will focus on the North American industrial instrumentation and systems business and will be named Yokogawa Industrial Automation America Inc. As the first step, Yokogawa Electric will increase its capital investment in the new U.S. operation by $25 million to support additional marketing and manufacturing activities.

Callaway Chemical Co. has announced that it is combining its paper and water treatment businesses to form a paper and industrial business unit. The company plans to combine its product and applications expertise in these markets to better utilize resources and to improve service for its customers.

NEW FACILITIES

ABB Drives & Metals Systems has opened a new 33,500 ft2 office building and training center in New Berlin, Wis. The facility centralizes a variety of remote office operations, while the large training center provides training for customers from all the Americas on the electric systems manufactured at the New Berlin plant.

The Service Division of Voith Sulzer Paper Technology has announced that it will build a pulp and paper machinery service center in New England. Scheduled to open in the summer of 1998, and tentatively located in southeastern New Hampshire, the new $8 million service center will provide complete roll servicing capabilities for the paper industry and will be capable of processing rolls weighing up to 100 tons.

Toyota Industrial Equipment (TIE), the sales, service, and marketing arm for Toyota forklifts, has signed a five-year lease on a $1.3 million building to be constructed in Columbus, Ind. The 30,000 ft2 facility will house TIE's parts and service managers, as well as its technical services, warranty administration, and distribution order processing functions.

Precision Roll Grinders Inc., a provider of industrial roll grinding services, has broken ground in Hancock County, Ky., for a third plant. The new 26,000 ft2 facility will put Precision within a few hours drive of most industrial roll users east of the Mississippi. The company also operates a 58,000 ft2 plant in Allentown, Pa., and a 33,000 ft2 plant in Carrollton, Ga.

GE Capital Railcar Services has purchased new pressure differential covered hopper railcars from Thrall Car Manufacturing at a value exceeding $35 million. These cars are completely enclosed and used for transporting dry, bulk products. The cars are designed to aerate or fluidize the product load, making it flow easily from the railcar.

AWARDS

Motion Industries Inc., Birmingham, Ala., has been awarded the 1996 General Motors Supplier of the Year Award. The international award recognizes supplier companies worldwide who exceed specific performance standards in the areas of quality, service, and price. Motion Industries is a distributor of bearings, mechanical power transmission equipment, fluid power transmission equipment, and hose products.

Computational Systems Inc. (CSI), a provider of maintenance systems and services, has won the President's "E" Award, as announced by Secretary of Commerce William Daley. The "E" award, which stands for Excellence in Exporting, recognizes outstanding contributions to the increase of U.S. trade abroad.

JOINT VENTURES

Voith Sulzer Service GmbH has announced that it will enter into an agreement with Samco Inc., a Farmington, N.H., firm, to cooperate in the supply of both mechanical and roll cover services, acting as a single-source supplier for the pulp and paper industry in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada. Samco designs and manufactures rubber and polyurethane coverings for the paper industry.

Golder Associates, Atlanta, Ga., has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Terrain Resources Ltd., Lethbridge, Alta. Golder Associates, a science and engineering consulting firm, will join forces with Terrain Resources, a company that specializes in remote sensing, geographic information systems, and digital mapping, to providegeomatics services to clients throughout the world.

EXPANSIONS/MODERNIZATIONS

Nim-Cor Inc., Nashua, N.H., has announced a major capital expansion program. Key elements of the current $1.5 million program include the installation of a Mazac 35 CNC lathe and Quickmill duplex drilling and milling machine. These machines will provide more flexible manufacturing capabilities, enabling Nim-Cor to offer increased quality and faster production cycle time. Nim-Cor has completely reorganized its manufacturing and repair facilities for better productivity.

At its Rockton Research Center in Rockton, Ill., Beloit Corp. is improving the No. 4 pilot paper machine to keep up with changing technology and customer needs. Beloit plans to rebuild the former, press section, and dryer in the machine throughout 1997 and 1998. In addition, Beloit recently installed a new Tapio paper machine analyzer at Rockton to help customers troubleshoot papermaking equipment and processes.

Centracor's New London, Wis., pallet facility will add 10,000 ft2 to its warehousing and manufacturing space. The expansion makes way for a new Viking nailing machine and will boost the plant's capacity by approximately 50%.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Fibrex Corp., Burlington, Wash., has been appointed exclusive worldwide distributor of large diameter TFE expansion joints manufactured by Furon Co.'s Mickleton, N.J., division. The fittings range from 12 in. to 60 in. in diameter and are used in chlor-alkali plants to contain hot, wet chlorine gas at temperatures up to 210F.

Northern Pump, a division of McNally Industries, and Scherzinger Pumpen GmbH of Furtwangen, Germany, have signed an agreement to jointly market their positive displacement rotary gear pumps. Northern will promote Scherzinger pumps throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, while Scherzinger will promote Northern pumps throughout Europe.

ISO

HBD Industries Inc. has announced that its Chanute, Kans., Barnardsville, N.C., and Salisbury, N.C., manufacturing facilities have received ISO 9000 certification. The company's other 11 plants expect to receive their ISO certification later this year.

Sternso Ltd., one of the original manufacturers of polyaluminum chloride, has been awarded ISO 9001 registration. SternPAC and TurboCLEAR polyaluminum chlorides are used in industrial water, wastewater, and paper processing applications.

Automatic Valve Corp., Novi, Mich., a manufacturer of pneumatic directional control valves, has received ISO 9001 certification.

The quality control laboratory at National Seal Co.'s Galesburg, Ill., facility has received ISO 9003 certification.

Joliet Equipment, Joliet, Ill., a supplier of large industrial electric motors and custom-engineered motor drives, has received ISO 9001 certification.
