MILL OPERATIONS
For the paper machine at its Franklin, Ohio, mill, Franklin Boxboard Corp. has ordered dryer heads from the Lawton Co. Lawton will design, cast, machine, and ASME code the 36 in. dia. heads for 150 psi operating pressure.
To control curl and moisturize on coater/laminators, Green Bay Packaging, Green Bay, Wis., has ordered two Steam-Foil systems from Thermo Web Systems Inc.
For the No. 3 paper machine at its Hamilton, Ohio, mill, International Paper has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of a new taper cone pulley.
Gilman Paper, St. Mary's, Ga., has installed a pair of Vincent VP-12 presses to dewater stock reject sludge after it is thickened with sidehill screens. Because the presses are located next to the bleach plant, T-316 stainless construction was used. The base frames of the presses were made of stainless, and the frames were lengthened to allow for direct drive and to avoid belts and sheaves.
For the No. 1 paper machine at its Bromptonville, Que., mill, Kruger Inc. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing. The gearing is part of an upgrade to the paper machine for improved quality and productivity.

For the No. 2 paper machine at its Pennington, Ala., mill, Fort James has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing. This new gearing is a result of joint efforts between Fort James and Lawton to evaluate and improve the performance of the drive system in the dryer sections.
To control curl and moisturize on an off-machine coater, Consolidated Papers, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., has ordered a Steam-Foil system from Thermo Web Systems Inc.
APC Paper Co. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of sole plates for the paper machine at its Norfolk, N.Y., mill.
Bowater Inc.'s Coated Pulp and Paper Div. in Catawba, S.C., has completed the reconfiguration of its No. 2 paper machine. The purpose of the rebuild was to improve the quality of lightweight coated (LWC) paper grades produced on the machine. The rebuild centered around a Beloit Bel Bond high-capacity counter-blade former specifically engineered to handle thermomechanical pulp made from southern pine.
To upgrade paper machine speed at its Cedartown, Ga., mill, Jefferson Smurfit has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new taper cone pulleys.
To upgrade the drive on the No. 41 paper machine at its Niagara, Wis., fine coated paper mill, Consolidated Papers Inc. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new taper cone pulleys.
Cartonajes Estrella SA de CV, Tizayuca, Mexico, has ordered a Filmpress from Jagenberg for installation in an existing board machine. Cartonajes Estrella is to use its new coating head, which has a working width of 4,500 mm and an operating speed of 915 m/min, to apply size to linerboard, corrrugated board, and folding boxboard with basis weights between 127 and 500 gsm. The objective is to improve quality as a whole and to increase the bursting strength of the board.
Hallsta Pappersbruk AB, Hallstavik, Sweden, has ordered a new rewinder from Beloit that is based on Beloit SoftNip winding technology. The web width variation at the Hallsta mill will range between 500 and 3,800 mm.
Merfin Europe Ltd., Ringaskiddy, County Cork, Republic of Ireland, has installed a Vincent VP-10 screw press. The mill uses the Air Laid process to deposit pulp on a dry basis into its paper machine. Overfly pulp is then collected with a spray system, and the press is used to dewater the waste slurry that is produced in this process.
Fiskeby Board AB, Norrkoping, Sweden, has started up an expansion to its existing line for processing ONP, OCC, liquid packaging board, and mixed waste. The expansion includes the addition of an Ahlstrom FiberFlow drum pulper and two new CR coarse screens that replaced existing tub pulpers and HD cleaners. Ahlstrom also provided a bale handling system and conveyors for the project.
The Votorantim Group of Brazil has ordered two Voith Sulzer Ecosoft calenders for its Piracicaba and Jacarei mills. For the Piracicaba mill, Votorantim will install a 2 x 2 roll calender with alternate top and bottom position Econip roll. This configuration is suitable for hard nip and soft/soft matt operations. The Piracicaba machine will be used for offset, coating base, coated matt, and gloss printings. Its facewidth is 4,650 mm, maximum nip pressure is 350 N/mm, design speed is 900 m/min, and surface temperature is 200C. For the Jacarei mill, Votorantim has ordered a 2 x 3 roll calender with top and bottom position soft covered Econip rolls for installation online in an off-machine coater. This machine will be used for coated art and label papers. The nip pressure is 350 N/mm and maximum operating speed is 1,100 m/min with a surface temperature of 200C.
Gebr. Lang GmbH, Ettringen, Germany, has installed a Twister reel wrapping machine from Voith Sulzer. The Twister is particularly designed for wrapping reels up to 3,600 mm and diameters up to 1,500 mm, with a maximum weight of 7.5 metric tons.
