PAPER COMPANIES

BADGER PAPER MILLS INC.

Badger Paper Mills Inc. has named Thomas J. Kuber chairman. Kuber was previously chairman and CEO of Great Lakes Pulp & Fibre. Great Lakes has named Alton R. "Rick" Berquist to replace Kuber as chairman. Kuber replaced Edwin R. Meyer, Jr., who retired as chairman of Badger in April.

REPUBLIC GROUP INC.

Larry Huser has joined the company as corporate controller.

YORK PAPER CO.

York Paper Co. has elected Eric J. Holzer exec. v.p. and COO. He was previously dir. of marketing with Abitibi-Price Inc.

INTERNATIONAL FOREST
PRODUCTS CORP.

International Forest Products Corp. has named Barry H. Miller v.p., pulp.

CARAUSTAR INDUSTRIES INC.

Edward G. Schmitt has been elected
corporate v.p., mills.

CONSOLIDATED PAPERS INC.

Lawrence Neidermann has been named group leader, systems development in the Information Systems department.

CROWN VANTAGE

Dan Wexler has been appointed to the position of account exec. for the metropolitan New York market.

LONGVIEW FIBRE CO.

Paul A. Robbens has been promoted to Amsterdam, N.Y., Container district sales mgr. Robbens replaced Eugene C. Mowry, who has retired after approximately 31 years with the company.

PLAINWELL PAPER CO.

This Plainwell, Mich., company has made five appointments in the areas of sales and operations. Edward G. Atwill is the Eastern region sales mgr.; Richard N. Ericson is the regional sales rep., Chicago, Ill.; Dennis Kelly is a technical sales rep., Great Lakes region; Robert J. Tardiff is a technical sales rep. in Plainwell; and Thomas J. Tomtshak is a mgr. of traffic and distribution in Plainwell.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER

J.A. "Jim" Cederna has been named a v.p. and company officer. Cederna is pres. of Arizona Chemical. Janusz Wyrebek has been named marketing mgr. for the company's Warsaw, Poland, offices.

WAUSAU PAPER MILLS CO.

Wausau Paper Mills Co., Printing and Writing Div., has appointed Thomas W. Craven to the position of v.p., operations for the Groveton mill. Carl J. Weinert has been named v.p., operations for the Brokaw mill. D. Michael Wilson will resign as v.p. and gen. mgr. of the Technical Specialty unit.

FORT JAMES CORP.

This Green Bay, Wis., company has named Timothy Reilly pres., North American commercial business. Also in this division, George Hartmann has been named sr. v.p., commercial sales; Paul Comisky, v.p., commercial marketing; Daniel Coonan, v.p., national accounts; Paul Farren, v.p., commercial field sales.

In the area of operations and logistics, Jack Rowley was named executive v.p.; Daniel Platkowski, sr. v.p., manufacturing; Thomas Froelich, v.p., recycled fiber; James Carr, v.p., transportation and distribution; Michael Tuchalski, v.p., engineering and manufacturing services; Michael S. Baumann, operating v.p./mill mgr., Green Bay East and Ashland mills.

B. Gregory Stroh has been named pres. of the packaging business. He replaces Gordon B. Bonfield III, who has resigned.

ST. LAURENT PAPERBOARD INC.

Richard Garneau has been appointed senior v.p. and CFO; Wilson Blackburn has been appointed senior v.p., operations; and Robert J. Geib is the new pres. and COO, St. Laurent Packaging Corp.

OXFORD SPECIALTY PAPERS

Susan Parrella was recently named dir. of marketing communications. Sharon Tomaselli was named product development mgr.; she will direct product development for all the company's paper machines in Rumford, as well as for Oxford's Binghamton, N.Y., joint venture, Surface Tech.

INTER LAKE PAPERS INC.

Gaynor L. "Bud" Nash has been named operations mgr. at Inter Lake Papers. This appointment follows Consolidated's completed acquisition of Repap USA Inc., the holding company for Repap Wisconsin Inc., which has since been renamed Inter Lake Papers.

GULF STATES PAPER CORP.

Catharine Wiswall Heath has been
promoted to management forester for the company's Columbiana timber management district.

UNION CAMP CORP.

Union Camp Corp. has named Timothy S. Nicholls gen. mgr., International Packaging.

KLABIN

Klabin has appointed Josmar Verillo CEO. Cláudio Lobl, the former CEO, was promoted to the board of directors.

UPM-KYMMENE FINE PAPER

UPM-Kymmene Fine Paper has appointed Matti J. Lindahl CEO; Pehr-Eric Pått v.p., business development and environmental affairs; Johan Furuhjelm is commercial dir.; Ken Ehrnrooth is sales dir.; and Nordland Papier technical dir. Jürgen Hoppe v.p., technology and research.

 

SUPPLIER COMPANIES

A. AHLSTROM CORP.

The board of directors has invited Juha Rantanen M.Sc. (Econ.) to become the future CEO of the company. Rantanen joined the company as exec. v.p. on November 1, and assumes the responsibilities of CEO in the winter of 1998. Krister Ahlstrom, CEO since 1982, will continue his work on the company's board. Jan Inborr will remain as Ahlstrom Group's exec. v.p. and CEO of Ahlstrom Paper Group.

BELOIT CORP.

Beloit has announced the following changes to its Paper Machinery Group organization: Jim Ewald is the new dir., project management; and Michael Oberlander is the mgr. of manufacturing services at the Blackhawk Center of Excellence.

Within the Corporate Operations Group, Jim Schneider has been named v.p., sourcing and logistics; and Ed Kelly has been named mgr. of manufacturing engineering.

VOITH SULZER PAPER TECHNOLOGY

Voith Sulzer Paper Technology has appointed Harry J. Hackl to its Board of Management. He will head the new marketing division.

O'BRIEN & GERE

Earl L. Hill has joined the organization as mgr. of Pulp & Paper Engineering. He will manage technical studies and provide engineering oversight.

GENERAL ALUM & CHEMICAL CORP.

William W. Wilcox has been named to the new position of coporate v.p. of sales. David H. Soule has been appointed to the new position of market mgr., pulp and paper, for the Great Lakes region.

KEMIRA PIGMENTS INC.

The company has promoted key executives, George L. Roberts III and Jeffrey R. Hyde, to expanded sales and marketing roles. Roberts has been named managing dir. of Kemira Pigments SA; and Hyde has been named v.p., sales and marketing North America. Additionally, Jouni Sario has been named managing dir. of the company's new office in Singapore, Kemira Pigments Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd.

ACROWOOD CORP.

Ravin Nadarajah has joined the sales team of Acrowood in Everett, Wash., as the company's Southeast Asia sales mgr.

GENCORP INC.

The Specialty Polymers business has appointed Dr. David Lee as plant mgr. of its Green Bay, Wis., facility. Dr. Nick G. Triantafillopoulos has been named mgr., Advanced Development.

NATIONAL STARCH AND
CHEMICAL CO.

Lawrence Gaspar has been named as business mgr., Paper Coating Resins, Resins Div. Susan W. Graham has been appointed to the position of national sales mgr. of Industrial Specialties, Resins and Specialty Chemicals Div.

SPIRAX SARCO INC.

Rick Gavlin is the new regional sales mgr. for the mountain region of the U.S. sales territory. The company also appointed Robert Jacenko as the regional sales mgr. for the northeastern U.S. sales territory.

LOUIS P. BATSON INC.

William "Louis" Redmond has joined the company as a product mgr. Charles "Chuck" Hays has joined the company as area sales mgr., responsible for machinery sales in North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

SCAPA PRESS FABRICS

Scapa Press Fabrics has added the following sales and service personnel: Tony Earles is now a service rep. for lower Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana; Bill Sparrow is a sales/service rep. for Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas; Charles Graves is a sales/service rep. for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware; Butch Kuba is a service rep. for Wisconsin and Minnesota; John Bobo is a service rep. for Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama; and Mike Garrick is a service rep. for North and South Carolina and Virginia.

Laura C. Benoist has joined the Polymer Products Div. as mgr., business development. Stacey B. Smith has been
promoted to account mgr., polymer products.

SIEMENS

Heribert H. Hauck has taken over management of the Pulp, Paper, and Printing subdivision of the Industrial Projects and Technical Services Group.

ALBRIGHT & WILSON AMERICAS

Jeff Hauck has been appointed v.p., finance and administration. He replaced Kevin Tully, who was appointed v.p-finance, Europe.

 

ASSOCIATIONS

AMERICAN FOREST & PAPER ASSN. (AF&PA)

W. Craig McClelland, chairman and CEO of Union Camp Corp., was elected chairman of the AF&PA at its annual President's Forum in Lansdowne, Va. McClelland will succeed A.D. "Pete" Correll, chairman and CEO of Georgia-Pacific Corp. Rick R. Holley, pres. and CEO of PlumCreek Timber Co., was elected first vice chairman; and John T. Dillon, chairman and CEO of International Paper, was elected second vice chairman.

 

OBITUARIES

BLACK CLAWSON CO.

Carl Michael Landegger, pres. of Black Clawson Co., died Oct. 28.

KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP.

William R. Kellett, a former pres. of Kimberly-Clark Corp., died Sept. 7 at age 98. Also, Federico A. Nicholls, former imports mgr. of Kimberly-Clark de Mexico, died Oct. 3 at age 81.

ALBANY INTERNATIONAL

David R. Turner, formerly of Appleton Mills from 1985-1997, recently passed away.

THE NEWARK GROUP

William D. Gooden, v.p. of Northeast Mills for The Newark Group of Cranford, N.J., passed away on Sept. 1. He had been with the company for 12 years, and had served as an officer of the Recycled Paperboard Technical Assn. for many of those years.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO.

Fred Hawsey, a lab technician with International Paper Co. for 40 years, passed away on Oct. 7 in Mobile, Ala.

MACMILLAN BLOEDEL
PACKAGING INC.

Robert M. Feldman, former gen. mgr. of MacMillan Bloedel Packaging Inc., died Oct. 3 at age 71.
