NEWS OF PEOPLE

PAPER COMPANIES

INLAND EMPIRE PAPER CO.

Wayne Andresen has been appointed pres., effective Jan. 1; he will retain his current role of gen. mgr. He replaces James P. Cowles, who is relinquishing his role as pres. but who will remain the company's dir.

CROWN VANTAGE

Robert Olah has been appointed pres. and COO. Olah was previously sr. v.p. He succeeds Ernest Leopold, who will remain as chairman and chief executive.

The company has expanded responsibilities for members of its Coating Printing and Publishing Papers team, which is headed by sr. v.p. Allen Byrd. Blair Alford has been elected dir. of marketing, and has assumed responsibility for field technical service; Stuart Gonzales will serve as dir. of customer supply systems. Jack L. Mackert has been elected dir. of operations for the company's Specialty Carton Div. plants; and Gary Blevins has been promoted to v.p., coated paper sales.

BOISE CASCADE

Judy Lassa will take over as packaging business leader, effective Jan. 1998. She will succeed John Leusner, v.p. and gen. mgr., who retired at the end of 1997. Richard W. Merson has been elected v.p., Alabama Operations.

POTLATCH CORP.

Potlatch Corp. has appointed John E. Hanby v.p., technology.

STORA GROUP

The company announced that its managing dir., Lars-Åke Helgesson, will resign in March; it has appointed Bjorn Hagglund, current pres. of Stora Forest and Timber, to succeed him.

UNION CAMP CORP.

The company has made several management promotions. Charles H. Greiner has been appointed exec. v.p., for the company's fine paper, distribution, and chemical products businesses; John T. Heald Jr., exec. v.p., packaging; L.H. Puckett, sr. v.p., Fine Paper Div.; and Thomas G. Lambrix, sr. v.p., Communications and Public Affairs. Susan M. Arseven, chief information officer, adds sr. v.p., corporate policy group to her title; and John T. Anderson has been named v.p., operations for the Fine Paper Div.

RIVERSIDE PAPER CORP.

Tom Harper has been named v.p., sales and marketing.

CONSOLIDATED PAPERS INC.

The following promotions have taken place in the company's Paperboard Products Div. Valton W. Lafler Jr. has been promoted to production mgr., folding cartons, and Donald C. Schroeder has been promoted to technical services mgr. In the Converting Div., Scott A. Edwards has been promoted to quality assurance shift supervisor. Terry L. Schmitz has joined Castle Rock Container Co. as a specialty account mgr., while Pamela J. Fritz has transferred to Inter Lake Papers Inc. as a safety supervisor. Michelle L. Austin has joined Lake Superior Paper Industries as a process engineering technician.

PORT TOWNSEND PAPER CORP.

Upon the sale of the company to Northwest Capital Appreciation Inc., Seattle, Wash., John Begley, formerly of Weyerhaeuser Corp., has been named the new pres. and CEO. Former CEO Ted Swain will remain as chairman of the board in an advisory capacity.

GREEN BAY PACKAGING INC.

Shannon Nick has joined the Folding Carton Div. as sales rep. for northern Wisconsin.

GREIF BROS. CORP.

Marvin W. Payne has been promoted to the position of regional mgr. with responsibility for the company's Michigan Packaging corrugated sheet manufacturing operations at Mason and Grand Rapids, Mich. The general managers of these plants will report directly to Payne. Robby Todd has been promoted to the position of gen. mgr. of the Southeastern Packaging corrugated sheet manufacturing plant located in Concord, N.C.

OXFORD SPECIALTY PAPERS

The company recently announced the appointment of Stacy Tucker as inside sales rep. She will work from the organization's Portland, Maine, office, and will report to Maureen McCarthy, sales operations mgr.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER

The Fine Papers Div. has named Michael D. Allen as business mgr. for Beckett Papers; Michael Van Alstyne has been named sr. account exec. for Beckett Papers. Linda McCloskey has been named sales account mgr. for the Southeast territory, representing the Hammermill Writing, Text, & Cover Papers line. Tom Haller, former business mgr. for Beckett Papers, has been assigned to the new position of mgr. of customer satisfaction. Margaret McDonald has been named product mgr. for Beckett Papers.

 

SUPPLIER COMPANIES

RAYTHEON ENGINEERS
& CONSTRUCTORS

R. M. (Monty) Glover has been named pres. and CEO of Rust Constructors Inc., a Birmingham, Ala.-based unit of the company. Prior to joining this organization, Glover was at Fluor Daniel.

BELOIT CORP.

Several senior management officials have joined a newly formed executive management team: Bengt Sjogren will assume the role of exec. v.p. for MillPro services; Larry Swift will become the exec. v.p. for MillPro services in Asia; Tony Roxo has been appointed exec. v.p., overseeing Brazilian operations; and Bill Hackett will continue to focus on operations and production as exec. v.p. for the paper equipment manufacturing sites.

In other news, Stephen Bannister has been appointed manufacturing mgr. at the company's Bolton, England, facility. He was most recently the line mgr. for various machining departments at Bolton Works. Charles Hunnisett has been appointed U.K. operations dir., responsible for paper equipment operations at the Bolton site. He was formerly the manufacturing dir. In the U.S., Dennis Winkleman has been appointed sr. v.p., human resources, and Tim Monahan has been appointed v.p., human resources, for the MillPro Services Div.

NATIONAL SEAL CO.

George Zagorski has been named exec. v.p. and COO. He replaces Han Poetsch, who retired on Dec. 1, 1997.

MARATHON ENGINEERS/ ARCHITECTS/PLANNERS LLC

Todd J. Hietpas has joined the company as AIA, project architect and Melinda M. Sprutles has been appointed architectural designer/field administrator.

INDECK POWER EQUIPMENT CO.

James M. Rafferty has been named pres. of the company. He joined Indeck in 1983 and has served as v.p. for the last 10 years.

TIOXIDE AMERICAS INC.

Stuart G. Hayes has been appointed dir. of sales, Americas region. He joined the company in 1979 and was most recently the company's key account mgr.

MONTALVO CORP.

Jesse "Jay" Magee III has been named technical mgr., responsible for all engineering function and technical direction for the company.

H.B. FULLER CO.

John R. Sommer has been promoted to national account mgr. for the Packaging/Converting business unit of the North American Adhesives, Sealants, and Coatings Group.

BABCOCK & WILCOX

James R. Wiegner has been named v.p., Utility, Environmental, & Industrial Power Div. He was previously pres. of Rust Ltd., a subsidiary of Waste Management. James S. Kulig, who previously held the responsibilities assumed by Wiegner, has been named v.p. and gen. mgr., B&W Service Co. He replaces William M. Farrell, who has been named v.p. operations, B&W Services Inc., in Lynchburg, Va., which was formed by the consolidation of B&W Federal Services and B&W Nuclear Environmental Services. Ronald F. Strunk has rejoined the company as v.p., purchasing, materials, and transportation.

GL&V/LAVALLEY INDUSTRIES INC.

Vince Murray has been named to
the position of sales mgr. for the Gulf Coast region. He will be based in Baton Rouge, La.

ATLAS ELECTRIC DEVICES CO.

Elizabeth Cichocki is the new technical sales rep. for the South Central region of the U.S.

MOYNO INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

Majid Delpassand has been named dir. of the new Moyno Technology Center, a joint progressing cavity technology research center of Moyno Industrial Products and Moyno Oilfield Products.

NEPTUNE CHEMICAL PUMP CO.

Fred Porter has been appointed operations mgr. Previously, he had served as production supt. and plant mgr. with the Milton Roy Co.

 

RETIREMENTS

THE JOHNSON CORP.

Roger Wiedenbeck, chairman of the board of directors, announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, 1997. Wiedenbeck joined the company in 1961 as a research engineer., and subsequently served the organization as pres., COO, and chairman of the board. He plans to continue his participation in the CPPA, PIMA, TAPPI, and the APMA, while authoring a history of The Johnson Corp.

DOW CHEMICAL CO.

After 27 years with the company, Jules Hagymassy is retiring from the Dow Chemical Co. He most recently served as development dir. for both R&D and technical service & development within the North American Paper Latex organization. Hagymassy joined Dow in 1970 after receiving his Ph.D. in physical chemistry. He currently serves on the Paper Technology Foundation of Western Michigan University and is the TAPPI sustaining member for Dow; he is also a member-at-large on the TAPPI Binders Committee. Upon his retirement, effective Jan. 1, Hagymassy will join the Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based Penford Products Co. as v.p. of R&D.

HONEYWELL INDUSTRIAL CONTROL

After 30 years of service, Sensing & Control v.p. and group exec. Ray Alvarez will retire at the end of Feb. 1998. Ron Sieck, current v.p. and gen. mgr. of the Micro Switch Div., will replace Alvarez as v.p. and gen. mgr.

 

OBITUARIES

GILMAN PAPER CO.

Howard Gilman, chairman and CEO of Gilman Paper Co., died on Jan. 2 of a heart attack at age 73. Gilman Paper, the largest privately held paper and building products company in the U.S., was founded by Gilman's grandfather, Isaac Gilman, in 1884. Howard Gilman worked for the company throughout his career and was named chairman in 1973. He was also president of The Howard Gilman Foundation, established in 1981 to support his artistic and conservation concerns as well as medical research in areas of HIV/AIDS and cardiology. Gilman Paper Co. will become part of the foundation and will continue to be operated by the current management team.

GREEN BAY PACKAGING INC.

George F. Kress, founder of Green Bay Packaging and honorary chairman of the board, died Dec. 8 at the age of 94. In 1948, Kress founded Green Bay Pulp & Paper Co. to produce corrugating medium for use at Green Bay Box, the horse collar and wooden box business where Kress worked in 1925 with his father, after graduating from the University of Wisconsin.

During his career, Kress held memberships in the Fiber Box Assn., the Folding Paper Box Assn. of America, and the AF&PA. He also received numerous professional honors throughout his lifetime.
