Mill Operations
For its Thorold, Ont., mill, Georgia-Pacific Canada has ordered new equipment and engineering support from Beloit. The order includes a Separplast and Plast Strainer, four primary banks and one secondary bank of Uniflow cleaners, three primary banks and one secondary bank of Posiflow cleaners, one Ultra-Fine screen, one BDAF clarifier, and one MR screen.
To increase production and improve sheet quality, Uniforet, Port-Cartier, Que., has acquired a new dual distributor roll headbox, fourdrinier table elements, a suction pick-up roll, and top felting for all three presses from GL&V/Black-Clawson Kennedy Pulp and Paper Machine Group.
Madison Paper Industries, Madison, Maine, has purchased a Twister reel packaging machine with transport system from Voith Sulzer. Startup is scheduled for the middle of 1998.
To improve winder trim efficiency for its Lawrence, Mass., specialty papers mill, Merrimac Paper Co. has licensed PPS/Trim-a trim optimization component of ABB's production planning software-from ABB.
Georgia-Pacific Corp., Ashdown, Ark., has acquired two 13.5 ft x 26 ft FRP composite bleach plant washers from GL&V/LaValley Industries.
Weyerhaeuser Co.'s Containerboard Packaging Div., Valliant, Okla., has selected Ahlstrom Machinery's Fiberline Div. to upgrade an existing continuous digester to improve pulp quality and digester availability. The digester system, originally installed in 1971, will be upgraded with a Diamonback chip bin, feed equipment upgrades, Hi-Heat washing, and a new flash tank system to facilitate atmospheric presteaming. Ahlstrom's construction division, Kamtech, will perform the field installation. Both phases of the project are scheduled for completion by September 1998.
Mead Corp. has awarded Babcock & Wilcox a recovery boiler upgrade project at its mill in Chillicothe, Ohio. The scope of the project includes a new superheater, economizer, sootblowers, and other components. Mead has applied for environmental permits to install and operate the new equipment. Upon completion, the upgraded unit will have a capacity of 3.1 million lb/day of dry virgin solids.
Kruger Inc., Trois-Rivieres, Que., has acquired a C-former for its No.1 paper machine from GL&V/Black-Clawson Kennedy Pulp and Paper Machine Group.
International Paper, Augusta, Ga., has ordered a Super TurnKnife disposable knife chipping system from Iggesund Tools. The system was purchased to improve chip quality and to increase knife life.
The Fort James Naheola mill in Pennington, Ala., has commissioned a VP-16 screw press from Vincent Corp. The press is used to dewater hardwood knots and shives. The project improves recovery of spent cooking chemicals, and the potential use of the press cake as a boiler fuel is being reviewed.
Domtar Packaging, Trenton, Ont., has acquired a C former for installation on its corrugating medium machine in May 1998. The former was supplied by GL&V/Black-Clawson Kennedy Pulp and Paper Machine Group. This equipment was purchased to improve sheet quality and increase the dewatering capacity of the fourdrinier.
Gulf States Paper Corp.'s Demopolis, Ala., paperboard mill has earned ISO 9002 certification.
The Herty Foundation, Savannah, Ga., has ordered a DynaMetrix Refiner Brain system. This system will allow clients to measure refiner gap online during trials, measuring the gap and wear to within 0.001 in. The system will allow papermakers to see what is happening inside refiners.
Abitibi-Price, Thunder Bay, Ont., has contracted with GL&V/Black-Clawson Kennedy Pulp and Paper Machine Group for a press section rebuild, with a dual-nip press and a third press design speed of 4,000 fpm to increase nip pressure capability.
International Paper's Moss Point, Miss., mill has received ISO 9002 certification for its No. 3 paper machine, the off-machine coater, and supporting areas.
Hunsfos Fabbrikker, Vennesla, Norway, has selected Beloit to rebuild the winder on its No. 4 paper machine. The project includes a rebuild of the unwind stand, supply of a PC-based BelTronic control and process management system, direct acting hydraulic rider roll relief system, and SoftNip rewind drum. The winder rebuild will increase finished roll diameter and improve roll quality.
Walki Wisa Ltd., Preston, U.K., has purchased a Twister reel wrapping machine and associated conveying system from Voith Sulzer. The Twister will be able to handle paper reels having a width between 400 and 3,400 mm and diameters ranging from 500 to 1,500 mm.
E. Holtzmann & Cie. AG, Wolfsheck, Germany, ordered a Twister reel wrapping machine and the extension of an existing reel conveying system from Voith Sulzer.
S.D. Warren/Sappi Group's Skowhegan, Maine, and Muskegon, Mich., mills have agreed to receive their supply of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) from ECC/ Faxe LLC, a joint venture between English China Clays (ECC) and Faxe Paper Pigments. The new PCC plants will be located adjacent to the two paper mills and will produce PCC for both filling and coating applications.
