Mill Operations
Inland Empire Paper Co., Millwood, Wash., has contracted with Beloit for the supply of a complete paper machine system. The order includes a Concept IV-MH headbox, Bel Baie RCB former, Tri-Ex press, Bel Run dryer section, two single-nip Kusters Beloit SoftNip calenders, TNT reel, and Beloit Lenox winder with compliant drum and articulating rider roll. The system will produce both standard and improved newsprint grades, as well as SCB, with production capacities of 680 tpd/215,000 tpy and speeds up to 5,000 fpm. Startup is planned for the fourth quarter of 2000.
Procter & Gamble has purchased two tissue machines from Valmet for its new mill in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Valmet, the Fluor Daniel Inc. engineering company, and Fru-Con Construction Corp. are partners in a consortium hired to build the mill. The $350-million expansion will add about 130,000 tpy of super-soft tissue and towel products. Machines should start up in early 2000.
To replace its current order fulfillment system, Georgia-Pacific’ Port Hudson mill, Zachary, La., has ordered an Elixir system from Majiq Systems and Software.
Fraser Papers has announced that it will spend $19 million to modernize chip handling at its Edmunston, N.B., pulping operations. The project will replace the existing chip screening and digester feed systems and will add automatic capping valves to all eight digesters at the facility. The project is scheduled for completion in early 1999.
S.D. Warren’ Somerset Mill in Hinckley, Maine, has purchased a Tapio paper machine analyzer from Papertech.
S.D. Warren, Muskegon, Mich., has ordered an Elixir order fulfillment system from Majiq Systems and Software.
For an expansion at its Calhoun, Tenn., mill, Bowater Newsprint has ordered a complete turnkey woodyard from Andritz Kone Wood and a complete two-line TMP system from Andritz Inc. The woodyard order includes two complete debarking and chipping lines with the LogPorter portal crane, PowerFeed drum infeed conveyors, KoneWood debarking drums, Konewood chipper, and TwinChipper. The pulp mill consists of a complete two-line RTS-TMP system from chip washing through screening. The new system will produce 814 tpd from pinewood for use in newsprint.
To control and optimize the pulp dryer at its Peace River Pulp Div. in Peace River, Alta., Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd. has ordered a Damatic XDi distributed measurement system from Valmet. The system will include Jetmatic MT headbox actuators and the STFI dynamic model for CD control of the pulp sheet profile.
Finch Pruyn & Co. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new taper cone pulleys to upgrade the speed potential of the No. 2 paper machine at its Glens Falls, N.Y., mill. Finch Pruyn has also ordered for the mill an Elixir order fulfillment system from Majiq Systems and Software.
Madison Paper Industries, Madison, Maine, has reached an agreement with Minerals Technologies Inc. for the supply of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). Minerals Technologies will construct an onsite, dedicated satellite plant at the mill to supply its patented acid-tolerant (AT) PCC technology.
Irving Paper, Saint John, N.B., has ordered an Innovation a.c.-coordinated drive system from GE Industrial Control Systems. The 575-v drive system’ multiple a.c. drives will control the mill’ No. 2 paper machine and winder. Irving Paper is upgrading this machine, which currently produces newsprint, to produce higher quality specialty paper. The refurbished paper machine will include the first online, multiroll soft nip calender application in North America.
International Paper’ Vicksburg, Miss., mill has ordered a New-Generation linear brush, high-pressure shower system from James Ross Ltd. The new shower will be 375-in.-long.
Champion International’ Quinnesec, Mich., mill has successfully installed a new order fulfillment system from Majiq Systems and Software. The new system handles all trims, produces and tracks the product, plans loads, and manages all shipping and warehousing functions. All orders are downloaded from the host computer interfaced with the Majiq system.
Consolidated Papers has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new taper cone pulleys to upgrade the No. 41 coated paper machine at its Niagara, Wis., division. Lawton will supply 14 new pulleys for a complete upgrade of the variable speed drive components.
Blandin Paper, Grand Rapids, Minn., has ordered a 12-camera Hilcont 500 automated break recording and troubleshooting system from Papertech for its No. 6 paper machine off-machine coater.
Georgia-Pacific, Port Edwards, Wis., has installed a small 6-in. Vincent screw press. It is used to thicken screen rejects for short-term storage. The project allowed existing tanks to provide sufficient storage capacity.
For its new chip mill in Russellville, Ark., Willis Enterprises has ordered a Super TurnKnife disposable-knife chipping system from Iggesund Tools.
Sweetwater Paperboard has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing for its paper machine in Austell,Ga.
Smurfit Newsprint Corp.’ Newberg and Oregon City, Ore., mills have successfully installed and started up the Elixir standardized order fulfillment system from Majiq Systems and Software. The final changeover to the new system happened less than six months after Smurfit finished its compliance study, and the startups at each location were less than 48 hrs apart. In order to share critical order and production data between the mill sites, Smurfit purchased one Stratus computer for each site and linked them together using Majiq’ database distributor (DBD).
Champion Brazil, Mogi Guaca, Brazil, has ordered an Elixir order fulfillment system from Majiq Systems and Software.
Stora Kabel GmbH, Hagen, Germany, has started up a new three-stage groundwood bleach plant from Andritz AG. With this capital investment, Stora will be able to bleach its stone groundwood to very high final brightness㭐.5% ISO— the lowest possible chemicals charge. The system is comprised of two peroxide stages followed by an existing dithionite stage.
The Mosinee, Wis., mill of Wausau-Mosinee Paper Corp.’ Specialty Papers Group has contracted with the Lawton Co. for evaluation of drive conditions on its No. 4 paper machine. Lawton will install the DriveVision drive monitoring system on the dry end of the machine to evaluate operating conditions of the drive system. Wausau-Mosinee Paper has also contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of four new taper cone pulleys to upgrade the speed potential of the No. 1 paper machine. Lawton will design, cast, machine, and deliver this equipment within a four-week schedule.
Sö Cell AB has ordered OxyTrac two-stage oxygen delignification systems from Sunds Defibrator for its Monsteras and Varo, Sweden, mills. Startup is scheduled for the end of 1998 at both mills.
Solikamsky Pulp & Paper Joint Stock Co., Solikamsk, Permskaya, Russia, has awarded Voith Sulzer a $28-million contract to rebuild and modernize its No. 10 paper machine.
For the No. 65-1 off-machine coater rebuild at its Biron, Wis., mill, Consolidated Papers Inc. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of replacement dryer gearing.
Papeles Bio Bio has ordered a new Valmet pressure groundwood line, including two T 1812 P pressure grinders with auxiliaries, to complete the groundwood modernization project at its mill in Conception, Chile. The expanded pressurized groundwood (PGW) mill is scheduled to be in operation in May 1999. When complete, capacity of the mill will be 380 tpd of Radiata pine PGW.
For the No.2 paper machine at its Hantsport, N.S., mill, Minas Basin Pulp & Power has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing.
