The board of directors has elected Kenneth M. Jastrow II pres., COO, and a dir. of the company.
WILLAMETTE INDUSTRIES INC.
The company plans to promote Duane C. McDougall to the position of pres. and COO at the next board meeting on April 21. McDougall is currently exec. v.p. of the company’ Building Materials Group.
ST. JOE CORP.
The company has promoted Charles Ledsinger to pres. and CEO from his post of CFO, which Ledsinger has held since April 1997. St. Joe has launched its search for a new CFO.
STORA GROUP
The company announced that chairman Bo Berggren has stepped down. Berggren resigned at Stora’ annual meeting on March 12, after recent controversy surrounding management conditions at the company. Claes Dahlback will succeed Berggren as chairman, if elected, and will take over in March 1999.
UPM-KYMMENE INC.
The company’ pres. and CEO, Raimo E. Waltasaari, will leave the company at the end of the year. Waltasaari has held these posts since 1982. Bengt Sjoblom has been picked as his successor. He is currently v.p., marketing of UPM-Kymmene Magazine in Helsinki.
SAPPI LTD.
South African Sappi Ltd. has appointed Klaas de Kluis and Wolfgang Pfarl to be dirs. of Sappi Ltd. De Kluis is chairman of the executive board of KNP BT and Pfarl is the recently appointed chief executive of the fine paper operations of Sappi in Europe.
AHLSTROM CORP.
Juha Rantanen M.Sc. assumed the responsibilities of pres. and CEO of the corporation on Feb. 1. He joined the company as exec. v.p. in Nov. 1997. Krister Ahlströ will become vice chairman of the board; he had been the CEO of the company since 1982.
FELIX SCHOELLER LTD.
A.I. Woodward has been appointed managing dir. of the Specialty Papers Div. He has worldwide responsibility and will be based at the headquarters in Pulaski, N.Y.
CROWN VANTAGE
Frederick T. Dalrymple has been promoted to sr. v.p. for Specialty Papers; he will lead all sales, marketing, manufacturing, and administrative activities.
GULF STATES PAPER CORP.
Sam Johnson has been promoted to v.p., manufacturing for the company’ Demopolis pulp and paperboard mill. Alicia Cramer has been promoted to business services mgr. of the Pulp and Paperboard Div.; she will be based at the company’ headquarters in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Bob Strenge has accepted the position of mill mgr. at the company’ pulp and paper mill in St. Helens, Ore. He succeeds Jim Huff, who has announced that he will retire at the end of the year after 32 years of service with the company.

Ken Boegh, process improvement leader, and John Allen, recycle supt., were awarded the I.H. Weldon Award for Best Paper of the Year at the annual meeting of the Canadian Pulp & Paper Assn. They received the award for a paper they coauthored, titled “ of Distilled Oil as a Flotation Collection in Deinking Mills.” Gilles Dorris, Marc Dagenais, and Maurice Douek from Paprican were the three other coauthors.

Dr. Douglas Wahren, pres. of the Paper Professor AB in Stockholm, Sweden, was presented with the 1998 Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award during the association’ annual business meeting on Feb. 16 in Atlanta, Ga. This is TAPPI’ highest honor for scientific and engineering contributions to the pulp, paper, board, or forest product industries.
