Union Camp Corp.’s Fine Paper Div. has selected Ahlstrom Machinery’s Fiberline Div. to supply Lo-Solids Cooking retrofits for its digesters at Eastover, S.C., and Franklin, Va. Startup is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 1998.
For the No. 2 paper machine at its Valliant, Okla., mill, Weyerhaeuser has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing.
APC Paper Co., Claremont, N.H., has purchased a Vincent VP-10 screw press to dewater OCC waste sludge prior to landfill. Environmental problems associated with an unstable landfill led to testing that, in turn, led to the purchase. The flow is thickened with a sidehill ahead of the screw press.
Port Townsend Paper Corp. has purchased nine pieces of bag-making equipment from Longview Fibre Co.’s Spanish Fork, Utah, converting plant. The equipment will give Port Townsend an entrance into the handle-sack business and added capabilities in bag manufacturing.
Provincial Papers has contracted with the Lawton Co. to convert its existing segmented dryer gear into a full ring nylon gear. This new, converted gear will be installed on the No. 6 paper machine at Provincial’s Thunder Bay, Ont., mill.
Cincinnati Paperboard Corp., Cincinnati, Ohio, has ordered a complete drying system from GL&V/Black Clawson-Kennedy (BC-K). The drying system includes 42 dryers, framing, siphons, steam joints, doctors, steam and condensate, pocket ventilation, prepiped framing, and gears. In addition, Cincinnati Paperboard is upgrading its existing line-shaft drive system and GL&V/BC-K is currently conducting a drive study for this upgrade.
For the No. 1 paper machine at its Bromptonville, Que., mill, Kruger Inc. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing.
Fraser Papers, Madawaska, Maine, has been awarded ISO 9002 certification.
At its Dryden, Ont., mill, the White Paper Business Group of Avenor Inc. has licensed multiple ABB manufacturing execution system (MES) products in an extensive project to reengineer the order management processes. Avenor selected ABB’s PTS for product tracking, QMS for quality management, PPS/Trim for trim optimization, and IXS for information exchange. The ABB system will be hosted on two IBM RS6000 enterprise servers running AIX 4.2 and Oracle 7.2. Employees will access the system through PC workstations running Windows NT. The project is expected to enable operational improvements at the mill.
For the No. 2 paper machine at its Austell, Ga., mill, Austell Boxboard has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new bearing housing assemblies.
To improve paper finishing and increase calender operating speed at its Maxau mill in Karlsruhe, Germany, E. Holtzmann & Cie. AG has ordered two Janus calenders from Voith Sulzer. Voith Sulzer will convert two 7,470-mm wide supercalenders for the No. 8 paper machine into Janus calenders. The rebuild, which is scheduled for the beginning of next year, will increase linear pressure from 350 to 400 N/mm, raise surface temperature from 90° to 140°C, and elevate calender design speed from 1,000 to 1,100 m/min.
Lake Superior Paper Industries has completed a paper machine rebuild with the installation of a gap former. The $32-million investment was designed to enhance the uniformity and surface qualities of the paper, resulting in improved runnability. Primary contractors for the project included Oscar J. Boldt Construction Co. for general contracting and Voith Inc. for the gap former. Since startup, sheet appearance, ink holdout, and overall printability have improved, and skip dots have been reduced.
Steinbeis Temming Papier GmbH & Co. KG has ordered a rebuild of its No. 4 paper machine in Gluckstadt, Germany, from Voith Sulzer. This rebuild includes the replacement of a traditional roll former with a blade former—the DuoFormer D. Rebuild work will begin in June 1998.
National Gypsum has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing for the No. 1 paper machine at its Pryor, Okla., mill.
To upgrade the speed potential of the No. 2 paper machine at its Orange, Texas, mill, Inland Paperboard has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new taper cone pulleys.
Quena Newsprint Co. has ordered a complete newsprint and printing/writing paper machine for its Kous, Egypt, mill. The order includes a ModuleJet headbox, DuoFormer CFD gap former, NipcoFlex press, TopDuoRun drying technology, and Speedsizer tandem soft calender. The order also covers the stock preparation system, approach flow, whitewater systems, broke preparation, winders, roll transport and wrapping systems, chemical preparation, piping and tanks, process control technology, and all drives and electrical components.
Stora Nymolla AB, Nymolla, Sweden, has ordered ABB’s production planning software (PPS) and product tracking system (PTS) with integrated functionality for warehouse management. PPS will provide the mill with roll and sheet production scheduling optimization, while PTS will manage reel and roll production, in-process inventory, folio, and cut-size sheeting, warehousing, and shipping. The MES products will be integrated with Stora’s global sales and distribution system (CSS), as well as various process control systems within the mill.
