UPM-KYMMENE

Kevin Lyden has been appointed pres. and CEO of Blandin Paper Co. Raimo Malkki will serve as Blandin’s sr. v.p. ofoperations, and W. Cary Young as v.p. of sales and marketing.

The Fine Paper Div. has set up an organization for sales and marketing of paper products from the mills of Kymi Paper, Nordland Papier, and APRIL. Ken Ehrnrooth is sales and marketing dir., Klaus Ballmùller is the sales dir. for graphic papers; Peter Ahlbom is the sales dir. for business papers; and Herbert Hennig is the dir. of marketing services.




POTLATCH CORP.

Phillip Baker has been appointed v.p. of sales and marketing for the Minnesota Pulp and Paper Div. He can be reached at the headquarters in Cloquet, Minn.

CRESTBROOK FOREST INDUSTRIES

Ichiro "Ike” Nakajima will succeed Masayasu Inoue as chairman and CEO.

STORA NORTH AMERICAN CORP.

The company has named Per Hellman to sales mgr., paperboard.

MARCAL PAPER MILLS INC.

David Shapiro has been promoted to exec. v.p.; prior to this appointment, Shapiro was sr. v.p. of sales and marketing. Joseph Elvin has been promoted to sr. v.p.–purchasing and environmental affairs; Gordon Mayer has been promoted to sr. v.p.–distribution and human resources; and Venkat Maroju has been promoted to sr. v.p.–manufacturing.

CONSOLIDATED PAPERS INC.

In the Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., division, Allan J. Glinski has been promoted to production mgr. Frederic J. Souba Jr. has joined the timberlands dept. as asst. dir. Thomas A. Jackels has been promoted to quality control supervisor at the Kraft Div.; Gerald A. Rucinski has been promoted to maintenance and power mgr. at the Wisconsin River Div.; and Daniel R. Hietpas has transferred to Inter Lake Papers Inc., Kimberly, Wis., as asst. technical mgr.

SKEENA CELLULOSE INC.

Bill Steele has been named CEO. Steele was previously v.p., pulp and paper at West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd.

PUTNEY PAPER CO. INC.

Jennifer K. Tattersall has been hired as controller.

GILMAN PAPER CO.

Gilman Converted Products has promoted Jeffrey P. McKeown to v.p.–sales mgr. He will be located in the Woodcliff Lake, N.J., sales and marketing headquarters.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER

The Fine Papers Div. has named J. Randall Whitney III as regional sales mgr. for Strathmore Papers for the Mid-Atlantic region. Megan Logue has been promoted to national sales mgr. for the Fine Papers Specification Sales force; Stephen Graves has replaced Logue as business mgr. for Hammermill Writing, Text & Cover Papers. Albert B. Brown has been named business mgr. for the newly created Wide-Format Ink Jet Media business unit of the Printing Papers Div.

PORT TOWNSEND PAPER CORP.

Odis E. Avritt has been named gen. sales mgr. of retail packaging. He will be based at the company’s Portland, Ore., bag and converting plant.

LONGVIEW FIBRE CO.

Thomas E. Vaught has been promoted to v.p. of manufacturing services and asst. mgr. of Longview Mill. He replaces Robert G. Guide, who is retiring with recognition for nearly 40 years of company service.

CROWN VANTAGE

Chris H. Strassburger has been appointed to the new position of Western regional sales mgr.; he will be based in Denver, Colo. Grant Rudolph has been promoted to Central regional sales mgr., based in Chicago, Ill.

KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP.

Robert P. van der Merwe, has become pres.—Kimberly-Clark Europe, while Timothy J. Lehman, formerly pres.—Child Care Sector, has succeeded van der Merwe as pres.—North American Feminine Care Sector. Lehman’s replacement will be named soon. Thomas J. Falk, group pres.—North American Tissue, Pulp, and Paper, will assume responsibility for European tissue businesses; Kathi P. Seifert, group pres.—North American Personal Care Products, will take over responsibility for European personal care businesses; and John A. Van Steenberg has accepted the position of pres.—Global Development.

PROCTER & GAMBLE

The directors of P&G have elected Brian J. Buchan, group v.p. and pres., paper products–Asia.

UNION CAMP CORP.

Joe McBride has been promoted to business mgr., Adhesives Business Unit in the company’s Chemical Products Div.

ZANDERS USA INC.

The company has appointed Alan L. Rowland to the newly created position of v.p.–sales and marketing.

William Bohach has been promoted to territory mgr. for the southeastern U.S.; Billy Lee has been named technical service mgr., coatings; and Richard Goddard has been promoted to the position of technical service mgr., paper.

Pete Metros has been appointed a member of the board. He is responsible for the activities of the Systems Div. worldwide, succeeding Wolfgang Vogl, who has taken on other duties in the company.

Bob Ward has been promoted to v.p. and operations mgr. for the Appleton, Wis., and the Duluth, Minn., offices. A subsidiary, the Harris Group International Inc., has promoted Kemp Curtis to the position of v.p.

IDEX CORP.

Frank J. Notaro has been appointed v.p.–gen. counsel and corporate secy.

BELOIT CORP.

Pierre Cardin has been appointed mgr., roll reconditioning operations at the company’s Manhattan Product Center in Cernay, France. Samuel Fong has been appointed mgr., project and trade finance for Beloit Asia Pacific.

RWT CORP.

The company’s pres., Bernard D. Asher, has been promoted to CEO and Ronald M. Berg, a senior sales and marketing executive, has been appointed v.p. of sales.

Joseph A. Boelter recently joined the company as COO; he will be responsible for Performance Chemicals and Process Industries.

DOW CHEMICAL CO.

Michael Gambrell has been named business dir. for Global Chlor-Alkali Chemicals and Metals. He replaces Vince Smith, who has been named v.p. and dir. of the company’s Michigan operations.

FISHER CONTROLS INTERNATIONAL INC.

John F. Gardner has been appointed sr. v.p., worldwide sales development and support and Robert D. Baker, dir., North America sales development.

MARSDEN INC.

Gerard J. Lucidi has been named the company’s new gen. mgr.; he was previously the manufacturing and quality mgr.

TENNECO PACKAGING

John Schwab has been appointed v.p. and gen. mgr. of the Protective Packaging North America business unit.

ALFA LAVAL THERMAL INC.

Sven Sjogren has been appointed pres. of Alfa Laval Thermal Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Va.

CANUSA CORP.

Kevin Gardner has joined the St. Alban’s office as the primary sourcing broker for New England; Steve Hale is the new v.p. of domestic kraft sales; Jarvis Coffin will be a selling broker in the Northeast; and Tim Pickering was elected to the position of v.p. by the board of directors.

 

ASSOCIATIONS

TECHNICAL ASSN. OF THE PULP & PAPER INDUSTRY (TAPPI)

Mark J. Rawlings, v.p. of operations and mill mgr. for the Southeast Paper Manufacturing Co., Dublin, Ga., and Robert J. Millikan, v.p.–engineering and technology at Georgia-Pacific Corp., Atlanta, Ga., have been elected to serve a three-year term on TAPPI’s board of directors.

AMERICAN FOREST & PAPER ASSN. (AF&PA)

Peter Bunten has been promoted to v.p., Paper; John Heissenbuttel to v.p., Forestry and Wood Products; and Terry Serie to v.p., Statistics. A new division of Fiber Resources and Products has been created, to be headed by Steve Lovett. The three new v.p.s will report directly to him. In addition, AF&PA announced the promotion of Ann Western to CFO and Gayle Pitts to chief of staff.

New chairmen were elected to various AF&PA committees. They include Archibald McClure III (v.p., Champion International Corp.), Periodical Papers Section; David B. Hopkins (marketing mgr., Jen-Coat Inc.), Specialty Packaging and Industrial Group; David C. Stevens (pres. and gen. mgr., Smurfit Recycling Co.), Paper Recycling Group; Charles L. AMERICAN PULPWOOD ASSN. (APA)

Jim Fendig, v.p. and gen. mgr. of Union Camp Corp.’s Woodlands Div., has been elected chairman of the APA.

 

RETIREMENTS

CHESAPEAKE CORP.

J. Carter Fox, chairman of the board of directors, retired as chair and as director. The directors expect to elect Harry H. Warner as non-executive chairman.

ARACRUZ CELLULOSE

This Brazilian company announced that its pres. and CEO, Luiz Kaufmann, is resigning. He will remain in his position until the board has designated his successor on April 17.

 

OBITUARIES

SUNDS DEFIBRATOR

Dr. Alkis Karnis, a TAPPI Fellow, four-time winner of the Weldon Award, and 1995 winner of the Arne Asplund Mechanical Pulping Award, died in Canada in late February. Born in Greece in 1931, Dr. Karnis was 67.
