Ranked alphabetically, the following is a highly personal listing of the most influential players in the world pulp, paper and paperboard industry. Appearing in the listing derives from a combination of economic clout, industry expertise, and visibility.
Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. The world’s largest producer of newsprint and uncoated mechanical specialties.
Asia Pulp and Paper Inc. (APP). A relative newcomer to the industry, APP is the largest and most aggressive of the producers in the Far East (excluding Japan).
American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). Although perhaps less influential than in the past, it is still the voice of the world’s largest pulp and paper industry.
Central National-Gottesman. The largest pulp and paper agent in the world.
Equity Research Associates. The company’s principal, Ross Hay-Roe, has highest profile of the investment analysts covering the Canadian industry.
Greenpeace International. One of the earliest and still one of the most influential environmental groups.
Haindl Paper. Based in Germany, it is the world’s largest privately-owned pulp and paper company.
International Paper Co. The world’s largest producer of paper.
Institutional investors. The common shareholder, worldwide, is wielding more and more clout in company board rooms.
Jaakko Pöyry. The largest consulting company (both industry fundamentals and engineering) covering the world pulp, paper, and paperboard industry.
Kimberly-Clark Corp. The world’s largest producer of sanitary tissue.
Merrill Lynch. Thanks to the dominant position of his employer, Sherman Chao is the most influential of the investment analysts covering the U.S. forest products industry.
Momentum International. The firm’s principal, Bernt Stenberg, is the Swedish industry’s most important industry guru.
