WILLAMETTE INDUSTRIES

The board of directors has elected Duane C. McDougall pres. and COO of the company. Marvin D. Cooper was elected exec. v.p. in charge of the company’s pulp and paper mills. Edward McMillan was elected exec. v.p. of the Building Materials Group; James C. Myers was elected v.p. of the pulp and paper mills division; Fred R. Kling was elected v.p. of the Corrugated Container Div.; and Cam Henderson was elected v.p.–chief information officer.

WEYERHAEUSER CO.

George H. Weyerhaeuser Jr. has been selected as sr. v.p.–technology. Weyerhaeuser succeeds Norman E. Johnson, who is retiring after more than four decades with the company. Weyerhaeuser returns to the U.S. after having served as pres. and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. since 1993.

SONOCO PRODUCTS CO.

The company’s board of directors has named Peter C. Browning pres. and CEO, succeeding Charles W. Coker as CEO. Coker, who has led the company since 1970, will continue as active chairman of the board of directors. Browning has served as pres. and COO since 1996.

ARACRUZ CELULOSE SA

Carlos Augusto Lira Aguiar has been named pres. and CEO. Aguiar has worked for the Brazilian pulp and papermaking company since 1981, serving as v.p. since 1993. Luiz Kaufman, the previous pres. and CEO, resigned in March.

HARMAC PACIFIC INC.

Michael Flannery has been named CEO and chairman, while Ralph Leverton has been named pres. and COO. Robert J. Day was named CFO and sr. v.p., finance.

MB PAPER LTD.

The company has appointed Dave MacDonald as gen. mgr. of its Alberni Specialties paper mill on Vancouver Island. He replaces Jess Beaman, who was recently appointed v.p., business transformation.

Douglas N. Freeman has been promoted to production mgr. at the Kraft Div.; Matthew J. Walters has joined the Wisconsin Rapids Div. as a process engineer; and Adrienne A. Waters has been promoted to technical support analyst–NT at Inter Lake Papers Inc.

Dan Tuomi has been named gen. mgr., Solid Wood Group and Terry Bennett, gen. mgr., Sawmills. Pat Ogawa, v.p., Solid Wood Group, has retired.

CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL CORP.

The company has reorganized its management ranks; the new structure will be built around seven businesses, each led by a gen. mgr. In addition, Joe Donald, exec. v.p., will retire later this year. The new gen. mgrs. are: Thomas Griffin, coated and kraft papers; Richard Porterfield, uncoated papers; Mark Childers, domestic forest products; and L. Scott Barnard, the Nationwide distribution unit/pulp and international sales.

Weldwood of Canada will still be managed by George R. Richard, and the Champion Papel e Celulose Ltda. by Odair A. Garcia; Mauro Cerchiari is the v.p., sales for this Brazilian subsidiary. Michael P. Corey will now oversee strategic planning; Burton G. MacArthur, materials and logistic function; and Paul B. Records, organization development, human resources, and facilities.

At the Nekoosa, Wis., mill, Dennis Brundidge and Roger Hasenohrl have been promoted to supervisors of Nos. 3 and 4 paper machines. At the Port Edwards, Wis., mill, Charles Klescewski and Tom LaComb have been appointed finishing supts.

Per Knuts has been appointed exec. v.p., operations, effective Nov. 1, 1998. He is pres. of Stora Publication Paper.

DAISHOWA AMERICA

Stan Hicks, resident mill mgr. at the Port Angeles, Wash., mill, retired on June 1 after a 43-year career in the pulp and paper industry.

OXFORD PAPER CO.

Norman “Pete” Jensen, 76, who worked for over 43 years in the paper industry, died on April 9. A native of Rumford, Maine, he had served Oxford in sales and mill managment at the Rumford and the Lawrence, Mass., mills.
