PAPER COMPANIES

LONGVIEW FIBRE CO.

Robert B. Pollock has been promoted to chief engineer, and Ronald J. Domreis to section leader–pulp mill engineers at the Longview, Wash., mill.

CONSOLIDATED PAPERS

Frederic J. Souba has been promoted to dir. of timberlands; he succeeds Miles K. Benson, who retires July 8 after more than 20 years with the company. Thomas G. Scharff has been named dir. of power and energy; he succeeds Kenneth K. Knapp, who is retiring later this year after more than 37 years with the company.

In the corporate engineering department, Stephen E. Jukich has been promoted to sr. instrumentation engr., and Jason C. Shields has advanced to sr. mechanical engr.

STORA GROUP

The Management Group replaces what was formerly known as Group Management and consists of the following members: Björn Hägglund, pres. and CEO; Ingvar Petersson, first exec. v.p. and CFO; Per Knuts, exec. v.p., operations; Yngve Stade, pres. of corporate research and sr. v.p., technology and R&D; Lars Bengtsson, pres. of the Fine Paper Div.; Torbjörn Pettersson, pres. of the Paperboard Div.; Horst Thaler, pres. of the Publication Paper Div.; Bert Östlund, pres. of the Stora Cell Div.

FORT JAMES CORP.

The company announced that Daniel J. McCarty has been named president of the company’s Dixie Business. Francis J. Florido was named pres., North American Towel and Tissue Business. Current Fort James pres. and COO, Michael Riordan, will leave the company to pursue chief executive officer opportunities in July. Gary Haskett has been named mgr., specialty papers for the Commercial Products business.

WESTVACO CORP.

Mark R. McMahon has been named managing dir. and pres. of Rigesa Ltda., the company’s Brazilian subsidiary. He succeeds O.B. “Bo” Fears, who has been elected a v.p. of the company and will return to the U.S. as asst. mgr. of the Consumer Packaging Div. E.J. “Manny” Mersis has also been elected a v.p.; he was also named the mgr. of global marketing for Consumer Packaging.

OXFORD SPECIALTY PAPERS

Sharon Preece has been appointed specialty printing and converting sr. sales rep.; Tarun Patel has been promoted to planning and strategy mgr.

DONOHUE INC.

Jeffrey C. Dutton has been named gen. mgr. of the Sheldon, Texas, newsprint mill; Carl M. Wright, gen. mgr. of the Lufkin, Texas, newsprint/specialty papers mill; and Michael L. Sullivan, gen. mgr.–recycling division. R. David Baucom has been named corporate dir. of human resouces, and Seth M. Kursman has been named v.p. of government affairs and communications.

FRASER PAPERS INC.

Richard J. Chapel has been appointed dir. of corporate communications.

SOUTHEAST PAPER MANUFACTURING CO.

The marketing and sales division of the company, Southeast Paper Newsprint Sales, has appointed Gary Zimmerman as technical service rep.

John Moler has been named mgr. for sales and marketing.

PORT TOWNSEND PAPER CORP.

Pamela Childs has been promoted to domestic paper sales rep. for the company. Andy Lake has been named gen. sales mgr. for the converted products manufactured at the company’s plant.

LYDALL INC.

Effective in the fourth quarter, Christopher R. Skomorowski has been named pres., COO, and a non-rotating dir., and Raymond Grupinski, pres. of Lydall Westex. James Carolan, pres. of Lydall Technical Papers, has been named exec. v.p. of Lydall Inc., effective immediately. He will become a non-rotating dir. at the end of 1998.

GILMAN PAPER CO.

Jennifer Brunozzi has been named northern region sales rep.; she will cover the Mid-Atlantic region.

WEYERHAEUSER CO.

C.W. “Bill” Gaynor has been selected as pres. and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. Since 1986 he has been v.p. and gen. mgr. of the Saskatchewan Div., which includes Prince Albert Pulp & Paper, the Big River sawmill, and related timberlands operations. Gaynor replaces George Weyerhaeuser Jr., who assumed the role of sr. v.p.–technology for Weyerhaeuser Co. on May 11.

JEFFERSON SMURFIT GROUP PLC

The company has named Gary McGann as CFO of the paper and packaging firm in the wake of the firm’s large U.S. merger. McGann replaces Ray Curran, who was appointed deputy chief exec. and exec. v.p. of Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., the new firm born of the union of the firm’s U.S. unit JS Corp. and Stone Container Corp.

BURROWS PAPER CORP.

Duane E. Judd has been appointed v.p.and gen. mgr. of the Paper Div. Most recently, he served the division as v.p. of sales and product development.

AES ENGINEERED SYSTEMS

This Thermo Fibertek company has appointed Charles E. Pound mgr. of its FCFormtek Div. He will focus on development and marketing.

BELOIT CORP.

Peter Carr has been named sr. v.p. and managing dir. of Beloit Europe. In the Paper Machinery Group, Pat Graham has been named dir. of materials, and Ed Kelly, manufacturing services mgr. Robert Harrison has been appointed sr. v.p.–MillPro Services, North America. Andrew DeGuire has been appointed v.p. of Marketing and Strategic Planning for Beloit Pulping.

APPLETON MILLS

Jim Rivard has joined the company as sales/service engr. He will be located in Escanaba, Mich.

Michael Muldoon has been appointed international sales mgr. He will be responsible for all sales in Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Winston Asai has joined the executive management team as v.p. and CFO.

NORTON PERFORMANCE PLASTICS

Gerard Walsh has been named pres. and COO of this Saint-Gobain subsidiary. Prior to this, he worked for 3M for almost 30 years.

RAPISTAN SYSTEMS

James Brouckman has been appointed exec. v.p. In this newly created position, he will be responsible for business units in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Venezuela. Steven Buccella has been promoted to v.p., field operations.

PIRA INTERNATIONAL

Mike Hancock has been appointed managing dir., while Ann Stirling Roberts and Marie Rushton are his co-directors.

JOHNSON CORP.

To better utilize its resources, the company has merged its two sales divisions. The new sales team will be headed by Ken McEnroe, v.p.–sales. Day-to-day management of the team will be headed by Ian Booth, dir. of sales. Additionally, a new organization, Johnson Technical Solutions, will be headed by pres. Ken Hill. Within that division, Jeff Chaloux will lead Hill Drying Systems; Zod Zandi

will lead the Johnson Systems Inc. U.S. facility; while Rene Boudreau will be in charge of the Canadian office.

ENGELHARD CORP.

Andres Vaska has been named regional mgr., Northeast sales and technical services for the company’s Worldwide Paper Pigments and Additives sales team.

CONTROL TECHNIQUES

This subsidiary of Emerson Electric Co. has appointed Scott Barlow to the newly created position of national accounts sales mgr.

JACOBS-SIRRINE CONSULTANTS

This member of the Jacobs Engineering Group has named Jules W. Homans pres. of the company.

TATE & LYLE NORTH AMERICA INC.

Loren E. Luppes, previously pres. and CEO and A.E. Staley Mfg. Co., has been named group pres.–operations. John R. Doxsie has been named pres. and CEO of A.E. Staley.

SHW INC.

This Torrington, Conn.-based company has named Dottie Rachels as a regional sales mgr. for Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Lousiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Texas.

JAMESBURY INC.

Andrew Fesuk has been named v.p.of sales and marketing. He has been with the company for about 25 years in national, regional, and district sales and product managment positions within the company.

IGGESUND TOOLS

The company has named John J. Tittle sales mgr. for the U.S. He replaces Rob Uelmen, who has moved into the newly created position of mgr. of technical support.

 

RETIREMENTS

POPE & TALBOT INC.

William G. Frohnmayer will retire effective June 30, 1998, having served this Portland, Ore.-based forest products company for 20 years. He has been v.p. for the Fiber Products Div. since 1982.

 

OBITUARIES

THERMO BLACK CLAWSON

Albert F. “Al” Kelly, 46, dir. of new product development, died April 23 in Ohio. He served the company as an executive for 25 years; his contributions included involvement with patent concepts in a revolutionary dry pulping technique. He was a member of PIMA, TAPPI, and IBMP, frequently participating as a lecturer and an author.

PULP & PAPER PROJECT REPORT

James R. Ledbetter, consulting editor for Pulp & Paper Project Report and an industry market research consultant, died on May 10 at the age of 52 in Concord, Calif., near San Francisco. Mr. Ledbetter had worked as a consultant to the paper industry for the last 17 years as Director of Communication & Information Services. Prior to this he was manager of Miller Freeman’s directory department in San Francisco and a project manager at AutoGraphics Inc. in Los Angeles.
