  Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in May of 7.9 million tons was 1.6% higher than May of 1999, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA). Year-to-date production is up 1.6% to 40.3 million tons.

U.S. paper production was 3.8 million tons in May, while board production totaled 4.2 million tons. The figures represent an increase of 2.3% for paper production, and a 1.0% decrease in board production from 1999 figures.

U.S. market pulp production stayed flat in May from April at 703 million tons. Year-to-date production is up 5.4% at 8.5 million tons.

U.S. imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 604,000 mtons in April, a 6.0% increase from the year-ago month.

Wastepaper consumption at U.S. paper/board mills was 3.0 million tons in May, down 3.7% from May 1999.
