  Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in July of 7.9 million tons was 4.0% lower than July of 1999, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA). Year-to-date production is up 0.2% to 56.1 million tons.

U.S. paper production was 3.8 million tons in July, while board production totaled 4.1 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 3.0% for paper production, and a 4.0% decrease in board production from 1999 figures.

U.S. newsprint production rose 11.8% in July to 662,000 tons. Year-to-date production is up 5.0% at 4.32 million tons.

Production of coated paper declined 67,000 tons in July from June to 770,000 million tons. Year-to-date production is down 0.1% to 5.4 million tons.

Wastepaper consumption at paper/board mills was 2.8 million tons in July, down 13% from July 1999.
