  Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in August of 7.8 million tons was 6.2% lower than August of 1999, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA). Year-to-date production is down 0.6% to 64 million tons.

U.S. paper production was 2.9 million tons in August, while board production totaled 3.9 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 1.3% for paper production, and a 10.6% decrease in board production from 1999 figures.

U.S. market pulp production rose 12.2% in August to 801,000 tons. Year-to-date production is up 7.4% at 5.8 million tons.

U.S. imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 627,000 tons in August, a 7.2% increase from the year-ago month.

Wastepaper consumption at U.S. paper/board mills was 2.9 million tons in August, down 7.3% from August 1999.
