North American paper companies have become more disciplined in their approach to capacity management, critical to weathering a possible economic slowdown in 2001.

Spending restraint continues, focus on environmental compliance projects
With overall spending projected as restrained for 2000 through 2002, environmental compliance projects have replaced capacity-driven ones to receive the most funding among U.S. projects and to rank second only to pulp mill improvements for Canadian projects.
