  Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in September of 7.7 million tons was 4.4% lower than September of 1999, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA). Year-to-date production is down 1.2% to 71.7 million tons.

U.S. paper production was 3.8 million tons in September, while board production totaled 4.0 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 3.8% for paper production, and a 4.9% decrease in board production from 1999 figures.

U.S. market pulp production rose 9.8% in September to 720,000 mtons. Year-to-date production is up 7.6% at 6.6 million tons.

U.S. imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 640,000 mtons in September, a 2.9% increase from the year-ago month.

Wastepaper consumption at paper/board mills was 2.9 million tons in September, down 9.3% from August 1999.
