Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in October of 8 million tons was 4.8% lower than October of 1999, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&smp;PA). Year-to-date production is down 2.5% to 71 million tons.
U.S. paper production was 3.9 million tons in October, while board production totaled 4.1 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 0.8% for paper production, and a 6.8% decrease in board production from 1999 figures.
U.S. market pulp production rose 3.9% in October to 686,000 mtons. Year-to-date production is up 7.4% at 7.3 million tons.
Imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 605,000 mtons in October, a 0.3% increase from the year-ago month.
Wastepaper consumption at paper/board mills was 3.0 million tons in October, down 1.6% from October 1999. |
