Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in December of 7.3 million tons was 10.1% lower than December of 2000, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA). Year-to-date production is down 2.8% to 94.3 million tons.
U.S. paper production was 3.6 million tons in December, while board production totaled 3.7 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 7.6% for paper production, and a 12.4% decrease in board production from 2000 figures.
U.S. groundwood production fell in December from November to 146,000 million tons. Year-to-date production is down 2.3% at 1.9 million tons.
Production of coated paper declined 13,000 tons in December from November to 731,000 million tons. Year-to-date production is down 1.5% to 9.4 million tons.
Wastepaper consumption at paper/board mills was 2.8 million tons in December, down 6.2% from December 2000. |
