Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in January of 7.7 million tons was 6.7% lower than January of 2000, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA).

U.S. paper production was 3.7 million tons in January, while board production totaled 4.0 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 2.1% for paper production and a 10.6% decrease in board production from 2000 figures.

U.S. market pulp production declined 12.0% on a year-over-year basis in January to 672,000 tons.

Imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 538,000 tons in December, a 5.3% decrease from the year-ago month. U.S. newsprint production totaled 623,000 tons, down 6.7% in January.

U.S. uncoated free-sheet production was 1.1 million tons in January, up 2.2% over uncoated free-sheet production in January 2000. Coated paper production declined 0.6% in January, and totaled 774,000 tons in January.
