Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in February of 7.1 million tons was 7.3% lower than February of 2000, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA).
U.S. paper production was 3.4 million tons in February, while board production totaled 3.7 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 5.0% for paper production, and a 9.4% decrease in board production from 2000 figures.
U.S. market pulp production declined 11.8% on a year-over-year basis in February to 614,000 tons.
Imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 640,000 mtons in January, a 4.4% increase from the year-ago month.
U.S. uncoated free-sheet production was 1.0 million tons in February, down 4.7% from year-ago figures. Coated paper production declined 2.1% in February to 709,000 tons.
