Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in March of 7.5 million tons was 9.7% lower than March of 2000, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA).
U.S. paper production was 3.6 million tons in March, while board production totaled 3.9 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 8.3% for paper production and an 11.0% decrease in board production from 2000 figures.
U.S. market pulp production declined 8.4% on a year-over-year basis in March to 623,000 tons.
Imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 558,000 mtons in February, a 0.2% decrease from the year-ago month.
U.S. uncoated free-sheet production was 1.097 million tons in March, down 11.9% from year-ago figures. Coated paper production declined 9.5% in March to 743,000 tons.
