Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in April of 7.5 million tons was 5.2% lower than April of 2000, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA).
U.S. paper production was 3.5 million tons in April, while board production totaled 3.9 million tons. The figures represent a decrease of 6.2% for paper production and a 4.3% decrease in board production from 2000 figures.
U.S. market pulp production declined 7.0% on a year-over-year basis in April to 654,000 tons.
Imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 574,000 mtons in April, a 10.6% decrease from the year-ago month.
U.S. uncoated free-sheet production was 1.07 million tons in April, down 5.9% from year-ago figures. Coated paper production declined 7.7% in April to 696,000 tons.
