Willamette Industries Inc. and Huber Engineered Materials, a division of J.M. Huber Engineered Materials, have agreed to build a precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) plant. This PCC plant will support the expansion of the Willamette facility in Kingsport, Tenn., producing and supplying customized PCC to Willamette's 1,200-tpd, uncoated fine paper machine. The plant will be completed in June 2002.

Operations at Lamb-Grays Harbor Co., Hoaquim, Wash., and its affiliate Meridian Machine Works, Meridian, Miss., were suspended as of June 25, 2001, with 100 Hoaquim employees and 69 Meridian employees losing their jobs. The financing package that Lamb had hoped to negotiate with its bank and a new lender could not be achieved, and the bank indicated it would foreclose. However, the foreclosure will not prevent another entity from acquiring the assets from Lamb's secured creditor in a foreclosure sale in order to supply spare parts and service. The foreclosure will likely result in Lamb's and Meridian's filing of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition or dissolving under applicable state law.
Lamb's bank is now finalizing arrangements whereby Ovalstrapping Inc. of Hoaquim and Gerrard-Ovalstrapping of Burlington, Ont., will continue to supply spare parts, both those presently on order and all future orders. The company also anticipates that the assets of Lamb will be purchased in order to complete work in process. While these arrangements are being finalized, a small staff will be on hand to receive and process customer parts and service inquiries and orders.
