Woodyard Upgrade Brings Better Yield, Lower Costs
St. Marys Paper in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., just completed a C$13.1 woodyard upgrade project that includes a new rotary debarker and slasher deck. The system has resulted in improved wood yield, lower costs for energy, maintenance, and effluent treatment, and a decrease in effluent BOD. Full involvement of the project team–which consists of operators and employees from different areas in the mill–was critical to the project's success.

Green = $Green for Bowater Environmental Projects
At Bowater Newsprint in Coosa Pines, Ala., projects for Cluster Rule compliance, several of which are unique in the industry, have improved more than environmental parameters. A new, $40-million brownstock washing and screening project has also resulted in lower bleaching costs, decreased operating costs, and avoidance of ongoing incineration costs.

Customers in Focus: Containerboard
Major national account corrugated box buyers believe the corrugated industry is doing a good job in supplying packaging at a reasonable price while meeting their quality and supply chain requirements. However, they worry that the corrugated industry is not making sufficient financial returns to invest in new plants and equipment required for innovative corrugated products. In this continuing series of articles focusing on customers of paper and board products, Pulp & Paper reports on the corrugated box market, speaking with box buyers and tracking new packaging trends.

Business Intelligence Brings Benefits at Papier Masson
At Papier Masson Ltée. in Masson-Angers, Que., a new, custom data warehouse draws information from systems throughout the mill to provide better business intelligence for decision making. Designed to facilitate efficient analysis of production parameters and paper quality on a set and roll basis, the system helps users establish relationships between mill performance, profitability, and production parameters to improve competitive advantage.

The Effects of Uncertainty on Working Capital
Uncertainty-from demand variation to basis weight fluctuations-can pose problems for mills and paper companies as they seek to optimize working capital. However, information systems can help confront these uncertainties while helping companies with the struggle to achieve low inventory levels, high asset utilization, and efficient customer service.
