U.S. PAPER AND BOARD PRODUCTION

Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in October of 7.8 million tons was 2.4% higher than October of 2001, according to statistics from the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA).

U.S. paper production was 3.7 million tons in October, while board production totaled 4.1 million tons. The figures represent an increase of 2.6% for paper production and a 2.1% increase in board production from 2001 figures.

U.S. market pulp production decreased 8.0% on a year-over-year basis in October to 682,000 tons.

Imports of newsprint from Canada totaled 560,000 tonnes in September, up 10.9% from 2001, according to the AF&PA.

U.S. uncoated free-sheet production was 1.0 million tons in October, up 2.5% from year-ago figures. Coated paper production increased 5.8% in October to 845,000 tons.
