NEW TECHNOLOGY

ACTUATORS

The latest offering from Jordan Controls is a range of linear electric actuators, which operate with three-phase AC input. The LA-2415 linear actuators accept either 240V or 480V inputs and operate at various speeds. They can thrust up to 6.672 kN and stroke to 457 mm, the US company claims. The actuators have over thrust protection.

ANALYZERS

Azur Environmental has introduced a device for water testing in the pulp and paper industry. InSpectra 200 is capable of performing biological oxygen demand tests and can provide the results in less than a minute, without the use of chemical reagents, the UK company claims. The readings have a better than 90% correlation to standard test methods and could enable mill operators to assess spills and maximize control of the process and wastewater treatment plant, the supplier explains. For example, operators could make energy savings through the optimization of deaeration units.

CIRCULATION EQUIPMENT

POM Technology has introduced the POM Concept. The system aims to achieve faster and shorter recirculations in the mill. The process reduces grade change times and investment costs. It is stable, stays clean and is free of pulsations, the Finnish company claims. The process requires less space than conventional installations and this could be of importance when performing rebuilds or increasing mill capacity.

CORES

Dura-Light fiberglass composite cores are the latest offering from the Double E Company. The fiberglass cores are lighter than other cores and could save on costs the US firm claims. The product will not fail during winding, transportation, storing or unwinding of a paper roll and they can be reused indefinitely, the company says. The cores are available in diameters up to 1.22 m and lengths of up to 9.75 m. They cost a similar amount to aluminium cores, but are lighter than the aluminium equivalent the supplier claims.

DESCALDING

FloKare Technology has developed a range of electronic descaling units for all pipe sizes, regardless of flow rate. The ScaleKare system works by producing a complex frequency modulated signal, which induces electromagnetic fields in the piping system. This causes small changes to the pH of the water, which helps to prevent limescale deposition the UK supplier explains. Over time, existing scale deposits are softened and gradually removed the company says.

DUST CONTROL

A tailor-made dust control system is the latest offering from BTR Environmental. The system's special extraction and blowing device is designed to eliminate build up of small amounts of dust on cut sheets, the UK company says. The device is mounted above and below the paper sheet and is connected to a dust collection unit. Air is extracted at high volume into the unit's air inlet while the blowing operation is connected to the dust collector's clean air outlet. Over a typical month's operation the process can gather some 80 l of dust. As a result, rejected stock is limited and savings to paper companies could be considerable.

EFFLUENT

IBS Viridian has launched VHPS, an odor control agent for paper mill effluent. The agent is designed to inhibit the biological production of hydrogen sulfide odors associated with wastewater treatment, the UK company claims. The product is applied to the anaerobic zones of equipment, such as sludge thickeners, digesters and secondary clarifiers. As an example, hydrogen sulfide levels ran at 400 ppm in a test anaerobic digester before VHPS was added, but fell to below 10ppm four weeks after the initial dose of agent.

FILTERS

Ronningen-Petter has launched the Max-Load family of liquid filters. The range features a selection of bag and cartridge media with increased surface area. This helps increase the filter's capacity to capture particles, which could extend the useful life of the media. The filters can capture particles throughout the entire depth of the media, the US company says.

FLOTATION CELLS

Italian supplier, Ing S Maule, has developed a flotation cell called Coprinus, in collaboration with the Spanish firm Varein. The cell contains large spectrum ejectors, which eliminate color spots, stickies and hot melts, the suppliers say. Foam overflow in the cell is control naturally with no need for other devices, such as suction fans. This design helps to lower the level of fiber losses the supplier claims.

MAINTENANCE

Fluor Daniel has launched TabWare, a maintenance management software. The software is designed to help users reduce administrative time and increase tool time and productivity. The program can handle multi-plant operations with thousands of operators by using an enterprise-size database, the US company says. A selection of the system's modules include: event tracking; work orders; scheduling; preventive and predictive maintenance; inventory control; and security measures.

REWINDING

Elsner Engineering Works has launched the redesigned HS-800/OWH-800 rewinding and overwrapping production line. The rewinder can be used in three different modes - core, coreless or sheet stiffened. The system has been designed for decorative gift wrap, but is also suitable for tissue and selected films, the US company claims. Cut length varies from 1 m to 5 m and web widths range from 500-800 mm. The system is the fastest on the market, according to the company.

PLATES

The Stabilizer Plate is the latest product from J&L Fiber Services. The plate offers improved load stability, increased energy efficiency, superior tear strength results and shrive reduction, the US firm says. The plate is ideal for mechanical pulping applications and is designed to provide mills with higher efficiency levels through reduced process variability and plate clashing.

RECOVERY

Kvaerner Chemrec and Air Products and Chemicals have teamed up to provide oxygen-based black liquor gasification technology to North American kraft pulp mills. Chemrec Systems can be used as a supplement or replacement for black liquor recovery capacity and are capable of doubling the electrical power output, according to the US/Norwegian companies.

SORTING

Naaraharju has developed a sorting system called the Actiw SuperSorter. The system works automatically as a sorter or a buffer. For improved use of space, the product can also be used as a multi-layer sorting system, the Finnish company says. Its buffer function is suitable for handling products stored on pallets and parent rolls within the finishing process, the supplier claims.
