NEW TECHNOLOGY

BIOCHEMICALS

BioChem Systems has developed a biochemical for cleaning back screen wire meshes and paper felt rollers. Its SolSafe 245 is a full-strength cleaner/degreaser that is partially biodegradable. The US company claims that none of its components are listed as toxic or hazardous. The product has been designed to replace existing chemicals which may be toxic such as xylene.

CORROSION CONTROL

A treatment program to control corrosion, fouling and scale in neutral pH cooling water systems is one of the latest products from US supplier, BetzDearborn. Dianodic III comprises the supplier's proprietary halogen-stable azole and a blend of calcium phosphate polymer dispersants. The program can be used with inexpensive biocides and the company claims it provides superior performance at elevated temperatures and in the presence of high levels of soluble iron, suspended solids, alum carryover and calcium hardness.

MEASUREMENT

A new wet end measurement and management system is one of the latest products to be offered by Valmet. The Finnish supplier says its Kajaani RMi can be used to measure the total and ash consistency of pulp, the degree of flocculation, retention levels as well as the general chemistry of tail water. RMi is integrated into the process control system similar to the way that quality management systems are used in a PM's dry end. The analyzer is modular allowing it to be tailored to customer needs. The user interface can be a Windows-based pc or a portable computer connected to the analyzer.

Saab Tank Control has developed a new level guage for the process industries, based on radar technology. The UK company explains that radar technology has the advantage of being uninfluenced by pressure, temperature, density or gas concentration and isn't affected by aggressive chemicals. Advanced signal processing on the company's TankRadar Pro helps filter out the interface effects of echoes within the tank, leaving a pure signal.

PUMPS

US supplier, Armstrong International, has extended its range of non-electric pumping traps. The PT-104 Mini Pump Trap is the smallest pump in its range with a height of just 31.75 cm. The cast iron mechanical pump can be used in confined spaces without the need for electricity, for example on heat exchange equipment close to the floor. The pump can operate at temperatures above 99C, without problems such as leaking seals or cavitation, the supplier says. The pump can operate using steam, air or other inert gases.

A 45,000 m/h liquid ring vacuum pump is now available from Nash Engineering. The UK company claims that the Premier 2000 series of pumps is highly reliable and easy to install. A stainless steel design offers resistance to corrosion and erosion. The pump can have 45 angle inlets, which were not previously available with pumps of this size.

SAMPLING

US company, Waters Equipment, has introduced a portable sampling system that can be used to monitor any point within the steam and water cycle of a power plant or boiler room. The Portable Sampler functions as a local grab sample station and the supplier claims it is ideal for use in troubleshooting operations.

SPLICER

A fully automatic unwind lap splicer is the latest offering from Atlas Hurley Moate. The UK company claims that the machine can operate at splicing speeds up to 500 m/min. The head design has a short splice angle, which helps reduce the size of the vertical freestanding festoon and maximizes production.

SYSTEMS

ABB Industrial Systems has introduced an automatic health advisory system for the paper machine. The ABB Smart Advisor monitors and diagnoses existing or impending process problems and gives operators automatic advice for resolving them, the US company claims. The new online system is an upgrade to its AccuRay Smart Diagnostic System. The product manages five area of the papermaking process including sheet breaks, felts, rolls, bearings and quality.

WEB INSPECTION

The SmartView Modular Camera Network is the latest offering from US supplier Cognex. The inspection system is a modular, automated surface inspection system for detecting, measuring and classifying defects on products made using a continuous process, such as paper production. The product consists of one or more intelligent cameras each containing a central processing unit (CPU) and image processing electronics. This differs from most stand-alone systems, where the cameras are connected to a central CPU. This feature allows manufacturers to add additional cameras without having to modify their hardware.

WRAPPING

US supplier, Omega, has launched a machine to polywrap bathroom tissue and towel products at high speeds. The Polywheeler machine is available in two models, one wraps single bathroom tissue rolls while the other is used for bathroom tissue and single towels. Maximum speeds are 220 m/min for single packs and 180/min for twin packs.
