• There is a new face on the board of directors at Fletcher Challenge. Dryden Spring has accepted an invitation to take a seat on the board of the New Zealand firm. He has extensive business experience and is chairman of Goodman Fielder and WEL Energy Group.

BT Loton has retired from his position as chairman of Amcor. Loton joined the company's board in 1992.

Duane E Collins and Heidi G Miller are to step up to the board of directors at Mead, taking the total to 13 members. Collins has served as the president and CEO of Parker Hannifin since 1993, while Miller took up the position of CFO of Citigroup in 1998.

Kari Muttilainen is to take up the post of director of Metsä Tissue's Away-from-Home (AFH) business area. Muttilainen has been the director of the company's Mänttä mill and the Baking & Cooking division since 1996. The current director of the AFH division, Timo Salovaara, will become the marketing manager of the AFH business area.

• Metsäliitto has decided to merge its building and mechanical wood operations - Finnforest and Metsä Timber - to form the Finnforest Corporation. Ari Martonen has been chosen to lead the company as its new president and CEO. Martonen previously held the same position at Finnforest.

Gunnar Palme will be the new president and CEO of AssiDomän. Since 1997, Palme has held the posts of vice president of Atlas Copco and president of the company's Industrial Technique business area.

Robert A Varley has been appointed director in charge of market research and development at Cepiprint, the Association of European Publication Paper Producers. Varley will assume overall responsibility for all statistical and support functions. Emanuele Bona will take up the position of market research manager at the association.

Sonny Schön has been named as the new managing director of Södra Timber. Schön is currently the managing director of the engineering firm, J Mared and succeeds Håkan Björklund, who has decided to step down from the position for personal reasons. Björklund is to stay with the company until his planned retirement in 2001.

• A number of changes are taking place at UPM-Kymmene Fine Paper. Markku S Korpela will replace Bjarne Nygård as secretary to the management group. Leena Elojärvi has been appointed area sales manager for Scandinavia, replacing Kai Segerståhl who retires at the end of August. Kimmo Rekimies will be responsible for Nordland Papier's communications in addition to his current responsibilities at UPM-Kymmene Fine Paper.

• The CEO of Gelderse Papiergroep, Hans Wouters, will take up the position of chairman of Cepifine. He will be joined by Matti J Lindhal, president of UPM-Kymmene Fine Paper, as vice chairman (uncoated). Wolfgang Pfarl, CEO of Sappi Fine Paper Europe, has been elected as vice chairman (coated).

Tom Hurst has been appointed as the new managing director of Garnett, the UK paper company. He replaces Michael Hawkins, who retired after 40 years at the company. Hurst joined the group as mill manager and was appointed production director in 1995.

Hans K Dahl has been appointed to the management board of Voith Sulzer Papiermaschinen in Ravensburg. He is to be responsible for technology and order processing. Karl Josef Böck replaces him at the Heidenheim unit where he will become director of the technology division.

• Beloit's parent company, Harnischfeger, has named John Nils Hanson as the company's CEO to replace Jeffery T Grade. Hanson has been serving as the company's president, COO and vice-chairman. Robert B Hoffman will also take up the position of non-executive chairman.

• Ahlstrom elected three new members to its board at the company's annual general meeting - Johan Gullichsen, Peter Seligson and Urban Jansson. Prior to the meeting, Krister Ahlström announced that he would no longer be available for election as a member of the board of directors.

John T Creighton is to head up J&L Fiber Services in Europe as its new director. Creighton has been with the company for 10 years and will be responsible for all the company's activities in Europe.

• Valmet Converting has chosen a new chief executive, Mikko Helander. He will be based in the UK and will have overall responsibility for the group. Helander formerly held the position of chief executive for Valmet Calenders.

Dan Vellieux has joined VIB Systems as vice president for sales and marketing. He will be responsible for sales in North America and marketing worldwide. Vellieux previously held the position of US vice president of sales for ABB's pulp and paper division.

Frits Visser is to take up the position of managing director of Kemira Pigments. Visser will succeed Risto Keränen, who has been selected as the new president of Kemira Agro.

• Raytheon has announced that David L Myers is to become the new president and COO of Raytheon Engineers & Constructors. Myers was a senior executive for Global Services at the Fluor Corporation.

Ted Cosse is to take over as global business vice president for Emulsion Polymers at Dow Chemical. In his new role, Cosse will be responsible for all activities related to the company's worldwide emulsion polymers business.
