Visy has installed two Atlas Copco PTS916 oil-free compressors at the Tumut mill

AUSTRALIA Two Atlas Copco compressors were used to ensure emergency energy back-up during commissioning and initial production trials at Visy's new Tumut pulp and paper complex in Australia. A large proportion of the energy needed to run the facility is generated onsite using greenhouse friendly biomass fuels derived from wood and bark waste.

FINLAND Honeywell is supplying a board machine automation system to M-real's äänekoski board mill as part of a rebuild project at the site. The revamped machine is due to start up in September. The contract is valued at over Euro 4 million ($3.5 million). The automation system and a Da Vinci quality control system will oversee process control and machine logics, as well as machine direction and cross direction quality control. The order also includes user interface for the machine drives.

GERMANY BPI-Consult, part of Jaakko Pöyry Group's Infrastructure & Environment division, has acquired the transportation consulting business of Heusch/Boesefeldt Germany. The units are located in Aachen, Hamburg and Munich. Some 55 people are employed at the German sites. The newly acquired business has net sales of around Euro 3.4 million/yr ($2.9 million).

GERMANY VIB Systems is celebrating 80 years of service with the global pulp and paper industry. Founded in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1922, the company says it has demonstrated a continuous focus on innovation in applying spray systems and steam application across all paper grades. The supplier has installed over 2,200 systems and recently introduced the SprayTech and SteamTech product families to its range.

GERMANY Shareholders and executive management of Jagenberg Maschinenbau have decided to discontinue the production of parts at the Neuss location from October 31, 2002. The company says it is operating at a loss and suffers from a considerable low capacity ratio. In view of the prevailing structures in the marketplace, it is unlikely that the situation will improve in the near future, according to the supplier.

HONG KONG The Jefferson Smurfit Group (JSG) has acquired the major activities, key employees and offices of PaperNet International (HK). The company says the acquisition is part of a strategy of having a meaningful presence in the Asian market. Under the scheme, the company has set up its own sales organization, Smurfit Asia-Pacific Sales (HK) with headquarters in Hong Kong and offices in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taipei, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

INDIA ABB has opened a research and development center in Bangalore to focus on software development and industrial information technology, or Industrial IT. The company says it is integrating its entire power and automation technology offerings to enable utility or industry customers to make their installations more productive.

RUSSIA Metso Paper is supplying a new sack kraft refining line to JSC Segezha pulp and paper mill in Russia. The new line will be installed on PM 10 at the site. Startup is due in June. The contract includes a DWA 945S twin press and RGP 262 refiner, as well as automation and electrification. Erection, startup supervision and operator training are also part of the supply package.

SINGAPORE The Supply-Chain World Southeast Asia 2002 Conference and Exposition will be held on May 21-22, 2002, at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. The theme of the event is Collaborate, Trust, SCOR (supply chain operation reference model) - Keys to Supply Chain Success, and marks the second event organized by the Supply Chain Council's Southeast Asia chapter. The event is expected to attract over 100 executives from the region.

UK Circor International has announced that Hoke products now conform to the PED as required by Article 3 of the European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/PC and under the Sound Engineering Practices of the UK. A Statement of Conformity is available from the company for products including Hoke manufactured valves, Gyrolok tube and pipe fittings, manifolds and pressure-operated actuators.

US Dow Corning has launched a new web-enabled ordering facility called Xiameter. The commercial internet model is said to offer silicones at the lowest available prices with delivery in seven to 20 days. By placing an order via the website, www.Xiameter.com, customers will drive the manufacturing process themselves, according to the company.
