    Annie has almost 10 years' experience as a professional news reporter and editor in international and local media based in the UK and China.

    Since her joining RISI's Shanghai office in 2007, Annie has played a key role in covering feature reports for PPI magazine and RISI website in the pulp and paper industry in Asia. In 2009, she helped to launch PPI's Chinese publication PPI China with more than 5,000 subscribers in the industry.

    Prior to RISI, Annie worked as a commodities reporter and news editor at the Interfax news agency in Shanghai, the Financial Times in London and the Shanghai Media Group. She worked as a contributor CNN World Report for two years in SMG. She holds an M.A. from Bristol University in the UK and a B.A. in International Journalism from Shanghai International Studies University.

    Mike Coffey was appointed RISI's Chief Executive Officer in May of 2009. Prior to this appointment, Mike was COO for RISI and had been with the company for two years. Mike comes to RISI from CMP Media, a B2B information company he joined in 2003 where he played numerous roles in product development, technology, and acquisition evaluation/integration. Constantly seeking customer feedback and input, Mike is passionate about RISI's products and customers' uses of those products. An analytical thinker, he holds a bachelor's degree from Rensselaer in upstate New York.

    Li Hongxin is Chairman and General Manager of Shandong Sun Paper Industry Joint Stock Co. Ltd, which was established in 1982. With nearly 30 years’ hard work, the company becomes a large listed company with total assets of RMB 13 billion, annual pulp and paper capacity of 3 million tonnes, and a staff of more than 10,000 people.

  • Bill Bowen

    Bill Bowen

    Bill Bowen is an economist (with degrees from the University of Melbourne and the London School of Economics) with extensive private and public sector experience in trade, economics, environment, forestry and foreign policy issues.

    He has been a key contributor to World Growth's Forestry and Poverty program and its climate programs.

    Prior to working with World Growth, he was a senior Australian diplomat (with postings in Accra, the World Bank, Prague and Wellington) and an advisor on environment issues (especially climate change) and in the Australian Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

    He has provided advice to the forestry industries in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific, including assessments of the socioeconomic significance of the commercial forestry industry in the region; analysis of forestry taxes and silvicultural investment; strategies to address illegal logging, including via trade restrictions, and the impacts of them; legality verification; and the threat and opportunity for the commercial forestry industry from proposals in UN climate change negotiations, including Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD).

    He is an experienced public speaker and has presented recently at conferences in Manila, Melbourne, Johannesburg and Brussels.

    Elizabeth Carvalhaes

    With broad experience in negotiations with the international and governmental spheres, besides a thorough knowledge of the Mercosur, Elizabeth de Carvalhaes took over the executive presidency of the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association - Bracelpa in September 2007.

    Her main objectives at the head of the Association are to communicate the good practices of the pulp and paper companies in the national and international areas, strengthen the sector's image in the international sphere, and to debate with the public authorities and the National Congress themes of concern to the industry. Furthermore, she will represent the sector in the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization – FAO and at the International Council of Forest & Paper Associations (ICFPA).

    Elizabeth de Carvalhaes began her professional career at Volkswagen do Brasil, in 1981, in the exports area, and went on to take part in the company's international negotiations. Among other positions, she was appointed Director of Government Affairs in 1997.

    The following year, she took over the Vice-Presidency of the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) and was active in the negotiations of trade agreements with the Mercosur, as well as with Chile, Mexico, South Africa and India, among other countries, over a ten-year period (1998-2007). She also took part in the Doha Round negotiations.

    A native of Rio de Janeiro, 54 years old, Elizabeth de Carvalhaes is a graduate of the University of São Paulo (USP) in Languages – Portuguese and German – and of the University of Vienna, in Austria, in Translation and Interpretation. She is also fluent in English, Spanish and French.

    Joined Arauco as a trainee in 1984. In 1985 I joined the shipping division of Arauco responsible for chartering of for the solid wood products business unit. Continue developing a career in Arauco passing through several responsibilities in the solid wood products commercial division and logistics division responsible. Inland transport and port activities manager, marketing and sales manager for logs and lumber in Far East, Europe and Middle East.

    In 1999 started Arauco project to set up a commercial office in Europe to handle its commercial activities, run this company, Arauco Forest Products B.V. from 2000 until 2006, handling Arauco solid wood products and developing the European market for such products. From 2003 responsible for the sales of Arauco pulp in Europe and responsible for the management of the office.

    In 2006 became Sales and Marketing Director for Arauco pulp sales unit responsible for the sales of 3.2 million tons of pulp worldwide, responsibility I still have.

    Married for 25 years, I have 3 children of 22, 19 and 14. Currently living in Santiago.

    Joined ITC in 1982 after a 2 year stint in ABB. Associate with ITC in Paperboards division from 1982 to 1989 and with ITC Global Holdings, international trading outfit of ITC, from 1989 to 1999, based at Singapore and Dubai.

    Joined back ITC Paperboards business in 1999 as Head of Supply Chain handling complete procurement of all inputs,logistics,warehousing and Inventory Management for 4 units operating across India.

    Pioneered ITC's WOW- wealth out of waste Initiative, to create awareness among general public on source segregation of recyclables, which are currently getting landfilled. This will help to reduce import of recycled fiber by paper industry and generate enough raw material from local sources.

    In the process WOW will reduce dependence on Natural resources substantially, protecting environment and improving green cover and general health and hygiene.

    Dr. Hans-Peter Sollinger

    After graduating from Stuttgart University as a mechanical engineer he had various management positions in companies such as Continental Forest Industries in Augusta, USA and Feldmühle in Düsseldorf, Germany. In 1982 Dr. Hans-Peter Sollinger started his career at Voith as an application engineer for coating machines. After various positions he was appointed to the executive board of Voith AG in 2000 and since 2005 he is president of Voith Paper.

  • Masataka Hayama

    Masataka Hayama

    Masataka Hayama was born in 1949 and has a degree in law from the Kyoto University, Japan. He joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) (currently the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry: METI) in 1973. He had served in a variety of government posts including Deputy Director-General of Environment Bureau and Deputy Director-General of Small and Medium Enterprise Agency during his twenty-eight years in the METI from 1973 to 2001, engaging on the policy planning for international trade, environment, energy and industrial development.

    Mr. Hayama entered into the pulp and paper industry in 2008 as President of the Japan Paper Association after he had served in the posts such as Executive Managing Director of Japan Information Processing Development Corporation (JIPDEC) and President and CEO of Sakhalin Oil and Gas Development Co., Ltd. following his retirement from METI.

    Sunil Sood has over 20 years experience in the Pulp and Paper industry. He started his career in India with M/S Ballarpur Industries in 1981 and managed the export business for glass packaging and later the domestic market for the paper business as a Product Manager. He joined Asia Pulp and Paper in 1988 and managed various senior marketing and business development and executive functions till 2003. Since late 2004, he is leading the Paper business for April in Singapore; now moving to group strategy Head for pulp and paper.

    He has wide experience setting up sales through channels in Asia, Middle East, Australia, Europe and USA covering coated and uncoated woodfree, converted scholastic and office products and packaging grades. He has wide knowledge of markets, equipment procurement and has helped by being on road shows to raise capital for new projects. He is well known in the paper industry circles and has been a speaker in many forums on subjects related to the paper business.

    He now leads a growing team of professionals in APRIL running the fine paper division out of the Singapore global headquarters.

    He is an avid reader, a budding audiophile with interests in listening to Indian and Western music and is happily married with two sons.

  • Cameron Wilson

    Cameron Wilson is a professionally qualified British journalist of eight years’ experience and joined RISI as News Editor in September 2009. Prior to this, he worked as a reporter for a regional newspaper in England for three years, covering crime, local government politics, and court reporting. His freelance work appeared in British national newspaper The Sun and on BBC news.

    Originally from Dunfermline, Scotland, he relocated to Shanghai in 2005 and worked for a number of business news outlets, including Interfax where he held the position of Pharmaceutical Editor. His association with China stretches back to 2000 having spent a year teaching English in a mainly rural area of Jiangsu Province.

    With his solid journalistic background, strong Mandarin and intimate knowledge of China, Cameron is relishing his new position in the pulp and paper industry and looks forward to playing a central role in RISI’s expansion of its Asian market coverage.

    David Walker

    David joined Macquarie Capital in January 2007, responsible for advisory activities for the global forestry and forest products, pulp, paper, and packaging sectors. During the last three years he has formed a global team of bankers focusing on advisory and principal investments, and completed a wide range of transactions in the sector.

    Prior to join Macquarie Capital, David was President of Global Consulting and Asia-Pacific operations for Pöyry, the world’s leading consulting and engineering firm in the forest products, energy and environment industries. Over the past 20 years David has largely focused on corporate finance and strategic advisory service for both the industry and investors worldwide, with a special focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

    Rita Sim

    Rita Sim Sai Hoon, 50, holds a BSc (Hon) in Chemistry and Management from King’s College, University of London and a postgraduate diploma in Chinese from Ealing College, London. For the past 20 years, she has been actively involved in developing her family business which includes operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

    A keen and concerned observer of Chinese political and cultural life in Malaysia, Rita is of the view that the community has reached a crossroads. Recent political developments clearly show divergent worldviews within the community, the impact of which will seriously alter the dynamics between the different ethnic groups. Given this scenario, and her detailed understanding of the complex Chinese community, Rita is well-equipped to act as a political connector, an agent that will help to dismantle silo-style thinking while keeping an eye on the larger agenda of national well-being.

    In 2004, Rita was appointed to the board of the Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad as an Executive Director, the first English-educated person to take that role. In this capacity, she oversees operational departments such as ICT, production, HR and administration. Two years later, her portfolio was extended to cover circulation, logistics and distribution, and marketing.

    With her significant experience in setting up joint-venture companies with foreign partners in manufacturing and utilities, she was the first woman to sit on the board of British Gas Asia Pacific Holdings Pte Ltd, an international energy and utilities company.

    Rita’s views on Malaysian politics and women’s issues are frequently published in the local Press. She is a member of the National Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Malaysia, and also served as a member of the National Advisory Council on the Integration of Women in Development. She is a member of the board of trustees of INSAP, a strategic and research think tank, which has conducted revealing studies on Chinese voting preferences, social and cultural patterns and the community’s expectations and concerns.

    Rita also sits on the Board of Yayasan Sin Chew as a trustee and holds directorships in several private limited companies involved in telecommunications and the manufacturing of engineering and industrial products.

    Thomas Strobel, born 1965 in Munich/Germany was raised in Brussels/Belgium. After his studies in Economics he started his career at a big Logistics provider at Brussels Aircargo Division and then moved on to Procter&Gamble European HQ Brussels where he held several Purchasing positions, like Corrugated where he was actively involved in the expansion of P&G in Eastern Europe/ Russia as well as The Middle East. Attracted by the Paper Industry he moved to ECA-Stone (today Smurfitkappa) where he held during 5 years various Sales positions including to International Customers. Since 3 years he is working with Danone leading the Corrugated Strategy for the Dairy, Baby+Medical business. Thomas is fluent in 5 languages and likes to relax during exercising various sports.

  • Dali Zhang

    Dali Zhang

    Dali Zhang joined RISI in March 2010 as Managing Director – Asia and Chief Representative of RISI’s Shanghai Office. Prior to working with RISI, he was Vice President and Head of Corporate Development at Norske Skog China. Between 1996 and 2007, Dali was working with Pöyry Forest Industry Consulting in Singapore, New York and Shanghai. Dali has more than 20 years of research, consulting and general management experience in the forest products industry, both in Asia and North America. His key areas of expertise include business and marketing strategies, business and corporate development, and quantitative analysis and forecasting of the global forest products industry. One of the most experienced forest products industry consultants in China, Dali has assisted numerous companies – both foreign and Chinese – on all aspects of businesses related to China and its integration with the rest of the world. Over the last 15 years, he has actively worked with both private and public sector clients in the region.

    Dali holds a Ph.D. in Forest Economics from University of Wisconsin – Madison and a MS in Forest Operations from University of Alberta. He also has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in China.

    Paul Brown is President of International Paper Asia. In this position, Mr. Brown has leadership responsibility for the company's businesses across Asia including coated board; consumer packaging; industrial packaging; food service packaging; uncoated free sheet (office and printing papers) and paper, board and pulp distribution. IP Asia is headquartered in Shanghai, China and employs some 4,500 people with operations and offices in China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, India and Thailand.

    Mr. Brown joined International Paper in 1984. During his career with the company, he has held various technical, manufacturing, sales and general management positions in paper and packaging in the USA and Europe before being appointed to his current position in November 2009. Prior to this position in Asia, Mr. Brown was Vice President and General Manager responsible for International Paper's industrial packaging business in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

    Mr. Brown holds a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA and an MBA from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

    Mr. Rajeev Ranjan Vederah is Managing Director of Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT), the largest paper producer in India and Malaysia. BILT is a part of 3 Bn dollar Avantha Group and has six manufacturing facilities in India and one in Malaysia with a capacity of over 900,000 MT of paper per annum, consisting of Woodfree Coated and Uncoated writing & printing paper and copier paper, and 95,000 MT of Rayon grade pulp per annum.

    Mr. R R Vederah has been with BILT, for over 25 years, where he has contributed significantly to its turnaround and growth. Currently, he is driving the overall business plan and is responsible for the company’s top-line and bottom-line volume and growth, along with managing its Business operations.

    Mr. Vederah is also involved in the development of BILT’s organization and Business Strategy towards a mandate to achieve the company’s aggressive growth plans. He is also the key driver of new technology and quality initiatives aimed at taking BILT to in the South Asian region.

    Mr. Vederah is the Chairman of Solaris Chemtech Industries Ltd and BILT Industrial Packaging Company Limited, and a key member of the Avantha Group Council.

    Scott Howard

    Scott Howard has worked for RISI's Macroeconomic Service for over four years. He is the editor of RISI's Monthly Economic Commentary and the Economic Outlook chapters that appear in all RISI forecasts. In addition, Scott has contributed to a variety of multi-client studies and consulting projects and has spoken at RISI conferences in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. His primary responsibility is collecting, analyzing, forecasting, and communicating macroeconomic data and its relevance to clients throughout the forest product industry. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Scott currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts.

    Bob Flynn

    Robert (Bob) Flynn is Director, International Timber for RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry. Mr. Flynn has more than 30 years experience in the forest industry, including 9 years as a forester for Champion International in Oregon. He has spent the past 20+ years as a consultant to the industry, with a focus on analysis of timber supply and demand trends outside of North America; international trade of logs, woodchips, and biomass; and trends in international timberland investment. He joined RISI in April 2006, and has published two reports on China’s timber supply and demand; a global comparison of planted forest economics and investment attractiveness for tree farm development; a profile of India’s forest products industry; an analysis of the impact of Russia's log export tax on Asian log markets; annual reports on international trade in woodchips and biomass; and most recently he published a report on South American plantation forestry and bioenergy markets. He holds a BA degree in geography from the University of Texas, a BS degree in forest management from Northern Arizona University and an MS in economics from the University of Oregon.

    Hannah Zhao

    Hannah Zhao Joined RISI in 2009 as an economist. Her responsibilities at RISI are focused on the area of world recovered paper and Chinese pulp market. She is in the process of taking over responsibilities of recovered paper analysis of RISI. She contributes to monthly commentary, quarterly forecast and long-term forecast on the world recovered paper market.

    Hannah holds a Master of Science degree in Resource Economics from University of Rhode Island, and her Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from Beijing Normal University, China.

  • Kurt Schaefer

    Kurt Schaefer

    Kurt’s responsibilities at RISI are focused on the area of wood pulp. He publishes a monthly commentary and forecast on the world pulp market, World Pulp Monthly. He also produces to RISI’s long-term pulp forecasts, focusing on variables such as pulp consumption, capacity, production, production costs, and pricing. Just prior to joining RISI, Kurt was Director of Pulp & Paper Forecaster. As the sole economist working on Forecaster, he was responsible for forecasting prices and market conditions across all of the major grades of paper and paperboard in North America. His work on Forecaster included developing detailed end-user driven demand models for the key grades, including newsprint, coated papers, and containerboard. He also directed a number of editorial projects, including a major long-term study of global newsprint markets. In 1995, he received the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

    Alex He joined RISI as an analyst in summer of 2004 in Boston office. In 2005, Alex was promoted to Economist - Asian Packaging Service covering mainly Asian containerboard and boxboard market. In March 2006, Alex was relocated to Shanghai, China to open and run RISI China Representative Office. Alex has been based in Shanghai since then. Alex writes RISI’s Asian packaging paper monthly reports and quarterly forecasts, which covers supply, demand, trade, price etc for Asia’s major 12 nations.

    Alex received his MBA degree in International Economics from Brandeis University in 2004 and also held a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Trade from Soochow University, China in 1993.

    Surya Raina

    Surya Raina is Vice President; Mill Intelligence for RISI. Surya is a Chemical Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the pulp and paper industry, including 15 years of operational experience in the Asian pulp and paper industry. His career in mill operations included working at Ballarpur industries, India and Phoenix pulp and paper, Thailand. Prior to joining RISI, he spent eight years working as a consultant with Jacobs Sirrine Consultants and Simon Consulting group.

    Surya specializes in cost benchmarking and is well versed in the cost structure of pulp and paper board grades across different world regions. He has also been actively involved in due diligence, risk and optimization studies. Surya has recently been involved in leading a major product launch at RISI, which involved developing the company's new web based cost benchmarking service. Surya leads a team of engineers based in North America, Asia and Europe.

    Portia Zhao

    Portia Zhao joined the RISI Shanghai office in Sep. 2006 and is a Product Manager specializing in cost benchmarking for the pulp and paper industry. Portia holds a Master degree of Engineering in Pulp and Paper Technology from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand; a Bachelor degree of Economics in International Economics and Trade, and a Bachelor degree of Engineering in Pulp and Paper Technology from the South China University of Technology. Prior to joining RISI, Portia was working with UPM-Kymmene (Changshu) Paper Industry Co., Ltd. in Shanghai, where she was Business Intelligence Analyst for China and the Asia-Pacific region. Portia has also two years of engineering experiences in Advance Agro Pulp & Paper Integrated Co., Ltd. in Prachinburi, Thailand.

    Levi Li

    Levi Li joined RISI’s Shanghai Office as the Asian account manager in January 2008. His main role currently's helping the Asian clients better leverage and benefit from RISI's global resources, to catch up with the latest market info, to better understand the market trend together with the industry cost structure as well, and etc. Before joining RISI, Levi worked with Sinar Mas Group - APP China, as Business Analyst, Sales Superviser and Marketing Intelligence Manager in succession. Levi also worked for Shanghai Leadway Ecommerce Co. Ltd. (www.umpaper.com), one of the most successful local market intelligence in pulp & paper industry, as CEO and head of information services division.

    Levi received a MBA degree in Marketing from Fudan University, Shanghai, in 2004. Also, Levi holds two Bachelor degrees: one is Bachelor of Arts, the other is Bachelor of Management.

    Esko Uutela

    Esko Uutela was born in Finland and has worked as pulp and paper industry consultant for his whole professional career of more than 30 years. He graduated from the Helsinki School of Economics (Marketing) in 1976 and from the University of Helsinki (Faculty of Forestry) in 1979. Since 1991 he is residing in Germany.

    After working for close to 18 years for a large forest industry consulting company in Helsinki and Munich, Mr. Uutela decided to establish his own forest industry consulting company EU Consulting in Starnberg, close to Munich in Germany in August 1994. During the past years, EU Consulting has increasingly specialised in offering consulting services for two sectors: the tissue and recycled fibre businesses. As of March 2007, RISI Inc. of the United States is the new owner of EU Consulting.

    Mr. Uutela has carried out numerous private client projects, as well as published regularly worldwide, comprehensive multi-client studies on tissue business developments and global recycled fibre markets.

    Mr. Maine is a co-founder of Resource Information Systems Inc., the company that became the analytic component of RISI, the leading information provider for the world forest products industry. Mr. Maine has 30 years of experience in the paper industry and developed the graphic paper segment of RISI. He is a recognized industry expert for Printing & Writing paper markets, prices, analysis, and forecasts. Mr. Maine is a regular speaker and consultant for most major producers worldwide as well as various end-user groups including insert & catalog publishers, magazine publishers, book publishers, paper merchants & brokers, and major commercial printers. He collects industry prices monthly, which are used by buyers and sellers in settling contract prices. Mr. Maine manages all of the World newsprint and printing & writing analysis and forecasts with regional economists located in Helsinki, Brussels, Shanghai, and Sao Paulo. His published reports include the monthly Paper Trader, World Coated Paper Supply: A risk assessment of capacity closures; World Graphic Paper Forecast; World Graphic Paper Capacity; North American Graphic Paper Forecast; and numerous single and multi-client studies.

    Mr. Maine holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Economics with distinction from Virginia Tech. He resides in Charlottesville, Virginia with his wife and three children.

Ms. Lu holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Cardiff, United Kingdom. She is fluent in English, Cantonese and the Shanghai dialect.
