    Mike Coffey

    Mike Coffey was appointed RISI's Chief Executive Officer in May of 2009. Prior to this appointment, Mike was COO for RISI and had been with the company for two years. Mike comes to RISI from CMP Media, a B2B information company he joined in 2003 where he played numerous roles in product development, technology, and acquisition evaluation/integration. Constantly seeking customer feedback and input, Mike is passionate about RISI's products and customers' uses of those products. An analytical thinker, he holds a bachelor's degree from Rensselaer in upstate New York.

    Mark Rushton

    Mark Rushton is UK based and has worked in print, pulp and paper for a career spanning 30 years. He has been reporting on the pulp and paper industry for over 10 years and has visited mills and companies across the globe. He started on Papermaking and Distribution (PMD), Digital Printer and Print & Paper Monthly. Mark is now the editor of Pulp & Paper International (PPI) magazine and is also responsible for overseeing content on the www.risi.com website and in Pulp & Paper International (PPI) China magazine. Mark is also the chairman of the PPI Awards judging panel and regularly interviews the leading CEOs in the pulp and paper industry. Mark holds a City and Guilds in Printing and Allied Trades.

    Hans Sohlstrom

    UPM is one of the world's largest forest industry companies with operations in Europe, Asia and America. UPM's businesses are Energy and Pulp, Paper and Engineered Materials.

    Hans Sohlströöm was appointed Executive Vice President of UPM in 2004. As a member of the Group Executive Team and reporting to the CEO he has been leading Marketing, New Businesses and Biofuels, as well as Corporate Relations and Development.

    Mr Sohlströ joined UPM in 1988. He has experience of several senior leadership positions in sales, marketing, operations and general management located in Finland, France and Germany. He is chairman of the board of several UPM subsidiaries, member of board of the Finnish Forest Industry Association (FFIF), European Fine Paper Industry Association (CEPIFINE), German-Finnish Chamber of Commerce and East Office of Finnish Industries Ltd. as well as co-chairman of the Russian Nordic Dimension Business Council Forest Industry Group.

    Mr Sohlström took his Master of Science degree in Industrial Management and Paper Technology at the Technical University of Helsinki and his Master of Science degree in Finance and Business Administration at the Swedish School of Economics ("Hanken").

    Matthew is a qualified Chartered Accountant and has 13 years of banking experience, of which 6 years at UniCredit and 7 years at the Royal Bank of Scotland. His banking experience spans project/commodity finance, leverage finance and telecoms finance and he has held various positions in UniCredit's Corporate & Investment Banking. Matthew qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen in 1997. Since 2008, he is responsible for structured transactions within the Metals & Paper industry.

    Ranjit Singh Baxi

    Ranjit Singh Baxi is Founder and Chairman of J and H Sales (International) Ltd., a company that has grown to become one of Europe's leading fibre recycling exporters, operating across the USA, Europe and the Far East. In 2001, the company received the Queen's Award for Enterprise (International Trade).

    Mr Baxi is President of the Paper Division of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) Brussels.

    Mr Baxi is a Board Director of Olympic Park Legacy Company – established to deliver a new thriving Metropolitan area of London after the 2012 Olympic Games.

    He is also a non-executive Board Director of Gateway to London, and of Think London – private and government-sponsored organisations set up to promote inward investments. Mr. Baxi is also a Governor of the University of East London.

    Mr. Baxi is a recognised expert in the recycling business, and is a major contributor to international trade journals.

    Amongst many awards received, Mr. Baxi was honoured to be voted "Asian of The Year" in 2008.

    A fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, FRSA, Mr Baxi holds a Bachelor of Science degree – BSc and a Master of Business Administration – MBA.

    Steve Sachoff

    Steven Sachoff joined RISI in April 2010. Based in Brussels, he is the editor of the weekly newsletter PPI Europe and also covers the European pulp market. Prior to joining RISI, he worked for over six years as a senior editor at the Interfax news agency where he covered Central and East European business and political news. Steven also launched and ran a trade publication for the European security industry and worked as an editor and analyst for a foreign policy research institute in the Czech Republic during the country’s transition to democracy and a free market economy.

    Saikat Dey

    Saikat Dey is an Associate Principal in McKinsey's Chicago office and a core member of the Basic Materials practice. He has worked extensively with paper, pulp and metals and mining clients in North America, Europe and the Middle East on topics of supply chain strategy, commercial optimization and investment strategies. He leads the firm's research efforts on developing integrated strategies for commodity companies to help manage cyclical demand, pricing and margin environments.

    Saikat received his Masters in Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and his undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering from the National Institute of Technology in India. Prior to McKinsey, Saikat worked at three technology startups and IBM in various sales roles across South Asia and the US serving primarily the basic materials sector.

    Phillip Lawrence

    Phillip Lawrence has a Masters Research degree in a theory area, Ecological Modernization, his research was a case study of the printing industry sector, which includes the pulp and paper sector. In this research Phillip explored how the industry has responded positively to environmental issues since the Kyoto based year 1990. He is currently writing a PhD thesis at Macquarie University in Sydney Australia where he is exploring Ecological Modernization Theory in regard to international government policy on climate change as it relates to the forestry, pulp and paper industry, in regard to China and Asia Pacific.

    Phillip is the Managing Director of Eco Logical Strategies, a Consulting Think Tank engaged in environmental policies in the case of governments and organizations. He has been involved in all facets of the printing industry sector for more than 35 years. Including paper, printing, pre–press and publishing.

  • Irina Van den Neste

    Irina Van den Neste

    Irina is a news editor at RISI's weekly publication PPI Europe. For the past three years she has been reporting on the European pulp and paper market developments, with a special focus on the containerboard market. Being a Russian language native, Irina writes extensively on the forestry sector in Russia and other East European countries.

    Irina holds a Master of Philosophy degree in European Literature from Cambridge University and a Master of Arts degree in Germanic Studies from Donetsk National University.

    Duncan Pollard

    Duncan Pollard's career has seen him move from the corporate sector, to the non-profit sector and back again. With a degree in forestry he worked for a variety of forest companies and spent 9 years with Shell firstly in their London head office, and then in Chile and Uruguay. He spent almost 10 years with WWF International heading their Forest Programme in Europe, then as Director of the Global Forest Programme and finally as the Director responsible for WWF's global thematic work on energy, water, forest, oceans and policy. Since late 2010 he has been working at Nestlé as Sustainability Advisor, providing advice and support on a wide range of sustainability issues across the organisation. Paper is one of his focus areas.

    Phil Riebel

    Phil is a senior sustainability and environmental advisor to the global forest products supply chain. His current customers include pulp and paper companies, industry trade organizations, publishers, retailers, printers, paper merchants and brokers. Besides his consulting work, one of Phil's current initiatives is to introduce Two Sides into North America. Two Sides is a non–profit organization that promotes the sustainability of paper and print, and is currently a well–know entity in Europe.

    Phil has over 20 years of International experience acquired in senior management positions in industry and consulting and has participated in numerous environmental projects related to the forest products industry worldwide. Prior to starting his latest consulting venture in 2010, Phil was Vice-President, Environmental Affairs for the UPM–Kymmene Corporation in Helsinki, Finland where he was responsible for developing the global environmental strategy and coordinating a team of 20 professional staff working in sustainable forestry and sourcing, environmental performance of production units, market environmental support and overall environmental services.

    Over the years, Phil has been a member of the Direct Marketing Association Environment and Social Responsibility Committee, the Magazine Publishers Association Environmental Task Force, the Forest Products Association of Canada Market Acceptance Committee, and Sustainability 50.

    Phil currently writes a regular environmental blog for RISI and he has published numerous article and columns on sustainability and environmental topics related to the forest products sector. Phil received his Bachelor and Master's of Science degrees from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

  • Marco Mensink

    Marco Mensink

    Marco Mensink holds a Masters of Science Degree in Forestry and Business Management from the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands.

    Before joining CEPI in March 2006, he worked for 6 years as Energy & Environment Director at the Royal Netherlands' Paper and Board Association, also representing the Dutch industry in Brussels.

    Mr Mensink started his career at Ernst & Young Management Consulting, working there for six years in Environmental Management and assessing the environmental issues in mergers and acquisitions.

    In CEPI, he is responsible for the Climate Change issues vis a vis the EU institutions, presenting the industries interests. Key energy issues at the moment are Energy market liberalisation, the EU emission trading system and bio-energy issues. Key environmental issues are REACH, the paper industry BREF, Green public procurement and Environmental data management. On behalf of CEPI, he is the chairman of the FTP Biorefinery taskforce and part of the Business Europe delegation for the UNFCCC Cop meetings. He also participates in meetings on Climate Change at the Alliance for Competitive Industries and the Alliance of energy intensive industries.

    Mr Mensink is a Dutch national, 41 years (1968), married and has three children. He is now living in Brussels.

    Joachim Klein

    Mr. Klein is of German–Swedish origin and holds a master's degree in business administration. Over the past 9 years he has worked with global companies in the sector to define strategies, improve performance, transform supply chains and integrate acquired companies. Prior to founding StepChange, he worked for 10 years as a management consultant with a large international management consulting and technology firm, where he was operationally responsible for building the pulp and paper consulting practice. In addition to his specialization in the forest, pulp & paper industry, Mr. Klein has consulting experience from a wide range of other industries.

  • Stefano Rossi

    Stefano Rossi

    Born in Lucca (Italy), Stefano holds a University degree in Pulp and Paper Technology and a Masters in Chemical Engineering. He started to work in the paper industry in 1988, in the Containerboard mill in Lucca, where he covered different positions, up to the full responsibility of the technological area including the production. In 1998, Stefano joined the Headquarter of SCA Packaging – Containerboard division in Brussels (Belgium) with the responsibility to create the Technical Customer Service Network and to develop a new generation of marketing standards, followed by a role as Technology & Manufacturing Director.

    Before taking the leadership role of SCA Containerboard in 2010, hereby supervising 6 paper mills in different European countries for a total capacity of 2.3 million tonnes, Stefano was Marketing & Sales Director of the division between 2007 and 2010.

    Stefano has been giving lectures at the Pulp and Paper University in Italy for many years and has been member and chairman of many committees and organisations in different areas of the paper industry and is still actively contributing through his role as Vice President of Cepi Containerboard. He has also been presenting several papers in different conferences and events.

  • Berry Wiersum

    Sappi Fine Paper Europe

    Berry Wiersum

    Sappi, the world's leading producer of coated fine paper, appointed Berry Wiersum (55, British) Chief Executive Officer of Sappi Fine Paper Europe (SFPE) on 15 January 2007.

    Mr Wiersum started his career at ICI Fibres, became President of Amoco Fabrics (Europe), then the President of Amoco Chemicals (Europe), and when Amoco was taken over by BP, he moved to BP to assist with the integration of the two groups in Europe. He subsequently left BP and joined Pechiney S.A. in France and ran the CEBAL packaging division until he was recruited as Managing Director of the Packaging division of Kappa Packaging BV (The Netherlands) and member of the Management Board responsible for paper manufacture and packaging in the Kappa group. He holds a Master of Arts degree with Combined Honours in Mediaeval and Modern History and subsidiaries in French and Music from the University of St Andrews in the UK.

    Berry Wiersum is currently Chairman of CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries).

    John Williams

    John D. Williams has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Domtar Corporation since January 2009. He is also a member of the Domtar Board of Directors.

    Mr. Williams has over 30 years of experience in both the consumer products and packaging industry. He began his career in consumer product sales in 1976, gaining insight into key market dynamics in the U.K. and the U.S.

    In 1988, he became European Managing Director of Sweetheart International, a major food packaging and food service business, where he cultivated a customer–driven market view and contributed to record profit and sales growth. In 1992, the company was acquired by the Finnish conglomerate, Huhtamaki. Mr. Williams was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Group President of the packaging business (Polarcup), one of the company's core divisions.

    Mr. William' experience in the packaging sector continued to grow at Rexam, the world's second largest consumer packaging group. There, he held a number of senior management roles in specialty food packaging from 1996 to 2000.

    His professional journey then took him to SCA Packaging, a business group of the global consumer goods and paper giant, SCA. As President of SCA Packaging Europe from 2005 to 2008, Mr. Williams helped transform the company from an undifferentiated manufacturer into a market–driven, customer–oriented packaging solutions provider.

    In 2010, Mr. Williams was named North American CEO of the Year by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry.

    Ignacio de Colmenares

    Ignacio Colmenares has a Master in Economics and Management and a Law Bachelor's Degree. He has experience of several leadership positions, notably as a CEO between 1996 and 2001 for TYCSA (European leader in high resistance steel cable, an innovative and highly competitive company recognized as such in leading world markets) and also for Global Steel Wire Group for seven years, which is the celsa Group company engaged in manufacturing wire rod and wire specialties in extensive range of steels and grades.

    He then worked as a CEO for Isofotón (Bergé Group) for two years. Isofotón is a solar energy company who offers photovoltaic, thermal, and high concentration technology solutions.

    Ignacio Colmenares was just appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ence, last December. Ence is the spanish leading company dedicated to the forestry resources plantation and its processing into pulp and renewable energy through the use of biomass residue and energy crops.

    Ignacio Colmenares is bringing to the company a considerable industrial experience in the steel and renewable energies' field, in which he has contributed to develop worldwide business projects and cost reduction.

    Alain Baudant

    Age 61. Married. Four Children. Three grandchildren.

    Has been with Smurfit, and now Smurfit Kappa, since 1995. Successively, CEO of Smurfit Condat, of Smurfit Asia and currently of Smurfit Kappa Paper Division.

    Speaks English and Spanish. Enjoys reading history, religion and philosophy.

    After practicing rugby, he is now a runner and a swimmer. He remains a passionate supporter of his national rugby team which in a company like Smurfit Kappa brings about many funny verbal jousts.

    He strongly believes in Europe's manifest destiny.

    Adrian Barrick was appointed Chief Executive of UBM Built Environment in October 2008.

    United Business Media Limited (UBM) is a leading global business media company, focusing on two main areas of business activity:

    • distribution, targeting and monitoring of news and information from the world's top companies, organisations and agencies
    • serving professional and commercial business to business communities, from doctors to game developers, from journalists to jewellery dealers, from farmers to pharmacists around the world with a range of media products including events, online, print and business information.

    UBM employs 6,000 staff in more than 30 countries. UBM is listed on the London Stock Exchange and in 2009 generated revenues of over £847 million.

    The division is UBM's dedicated publishing and events operation, predominantly serving the UK's construction and property communities. It includes some of the most-highly respected brands in b2b, including Building, Property Week, and Barbour ABI.

    Before taking up the CEO role, Adrian was group director of Property & Construction Media, the publishing arm of UBM Built Environment.

    Adrian – who was named PPA business publisher of the year in 2007 – has driven the transformation of UBM Built Environment's print products into multi–channel brands, serving an audience of 300k+ professionals in the built environment through a panoply of different channels. Building's website was judged the best in business media in 2007.

    Before moving into publishing in 2004, Adrian was editor of Building magazine for eight years. In that time, subscriptions to Building doubled and the title was named business magazine of the year three times. He also won four editor of the year awards.

    Adrian was a journalist for 20 years and wrote for several national newspapers as well as a variety of business titles. He also appeared on TV and radio as a construction industry commentator numerous times, including fronting an Open University programme on the subject. He was named Young Business Journalist of the Year in 1989.

  • Rod Young

    Rod Young

    Rod Young started modeling and forecasting in the pulp and paper industry in 1977. Since then, his work in international pulp and paper markets has received worldwide recognition.

    In March 2005, he became President and CEO of Paperloop, which was later renamed RISI in 2006. Rod Young has remained an active contributor to RISI's forecasts since stepping down as RISI's CEO and being named Chairman in 2007. Rod, a founding member of RISI, has 32 years of experience tracking and reporting on the global pulp and paper markets. In 2009, Rod took on responsibility for ensuring that all RISI's economic analysis meets or exceeds the industry's expectation for excellence and accuracy when he took on the role of RISI's Chief Economic Advisor.

    Rod received a Master of Science degree in Forestry Economics from Virginia Polytechnical Institute in 1977 and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from Michigan State University.

  • Bob Flynn

    Bob Flynn

    Robert (Bob) Flynn is Director, International Timber for RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry. Bob has more than 30 years experience in the forest industry, including 9 years as a forester for Champion International in Oregon. He has spent the past 20+ years as a consultant to the industry, with a focus on analysis of timber supply and demand trends outside of North America; international trade of logs, woodchips, and biomass; and trends in international timberland investment. He joined RISI in April 2006, and has published two reports on China's timber supply and demand; a global comparison of planted forest economics and investment attractiveness for tree farm development; a profile of India's forest products industry; an analysis of the impact of Russia's log export tax on Asian log markets; annual reports on international trade in woodchips and biomass; and most recently he published a report on South American plantation forestry and bioenergy markets. He holds a BA degree in geography from the University of Texas, a BS degree in forest management from Northern Arizona University and an MS in economics from the University of Oregon.

  • Ken Waghorne

    Ken Waghorne

    Ken has specialized in the paper packaging markets for RISI since 1983. He provides detailed monthly and quarterly analysis and forecasts of the North American paper packaging markets as well as single- and multi-client studies. He developed RISI's international containerboard model as well as the paper packaging models for the Latin American markets. He also produces the RISI end-use market analysis for the Paperboard Packaging Council's Trends Report on the US folding carton industry. Ken also manages RISI's global packaging economic team, and directs the incorporation of the forecasts from North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America into RISI's global reports.

    Ken holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Economics from Virginia Tech and his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from LSU.

  • Esko Uutela

    Esko Uutela

    Esko Uutela was born in Finland and has worked as pulp and paper industry consultant for his whole professional career of more than 30 years. He graduated from the Helsinki School of Economics (Marketing) in 1976 and from the University of Helsinki (Faculty of Forestry) in 1979. Since 1991 he is residing in Germany.

    After working for close to 18 years for a large forest industry consulting company in Helsinki and Munich, Mr. Uutela decided to establish his own forest industry consulting company EU Consulting in Starnberg, close to Munich in Germany in August 1994. During the past years, EU Consulting has increasingly specialised in offering consulting services for two sectors: the tissue and recycled fibre businesses. As of March 2007, RISI Inc. of the United States is the new owner of EU Consulting.

    Mr. Uutela has carried out numerous private client projects, as well as published regularly worldwide, comprehensive multi-client studies on tissue business developments and global recycled fibre markets.

    Matt Graves

    Matt has worked for over 10 years at RISI with a focus on the global pulp and paper industry. He manages commercial activities with RISI clients globally and travels extensively in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He has also led a number of consulting engagements with key clients in Europe and Asia.

    Matt received an MBA from Boston University in 1999.

  • Jukka Kuntonen

    Jukka Kuntonen

    Jukka holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Products Technology from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. He has also completed supplementary studies in economics in US at Miami University, OH. Jukka Kuntonen joined RISI in 2008 as a Benchmarking Analyst. Before joining RISI, Mr. Kuntonen has worked in several production related positions for pulp and paper industry in Finland, USA and Brazil. At RISI Jukka has worked with cash manufacturing cost analyses, using proven methodology to estimate cost competitiveness of existing pulp and paper mills. In addition he has recently developed a new methodology and tools for mill level total cost and asset value analyses that are available in RISI's new Analytical Cornerstone 4.0 platform.

  • Sampo Timonen

    Sampo Timonen

    Sampo Timonen joined RISI in 2008 as the Director of European Graphic Paper. He is one of Europe's leading Pulp and Paper industry analysts with over a decade of industry-specific expertise.

    Prior to joining RISI, Timonen served as Equity Analyst at Handelsbanken AB, heading up their pulp and paper research. At Handelsbanken, Timonen’s coverage of companies included UPM, Stora Enso, M-real, Norske Skog, Holmen, Ahlstrom and their international peer companies. Before Handelsbanken, he worked as Equity Analyst at FIM Equities for three years. There, he analyzed Pöyry, Kemira and Ruukki Group in addition to those companies mentioned earlier. Previous to FIM, Timonen was Research Manager at Oy Keskuslaboratorio Ab (KCL). Responsibilities included project management of Future Watch, a forest industry trend-spotting program. Prior to KCL, Timonen served as Market Analyst at Myllykoski Paper Oy, forecasting demand and prices of newsprint, SC and LWC papers. He began his career in 1999 at M-real Kirkniemi mills and M-real (Board Division) in customer service.

    Timonen's analysis is now featured in RISI's European Graphic Paper Forecast, Paper Trader Europe and various Viewpoints and features on RISI's main website.

    Ville Henttonen

    Ville Henttonen is a Product Manager in RISI’s Cost Benchmarking Services. Ville holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Products Technology from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. Since joining RISI in 2005, Ville has worked on various cash manufacturing cost analyses, using proven methodology to estimate cost competitiveness of pulp and paper mills. His recent publications include competitive cost studies of European packaging and fine paper grades.

    David Katsnelson

    David Katsnelson joined RISI in July 2010, and is responsible for the collecting, analyzing, forecasting, and communicating macroeconomic data and its relevance to clients throughout the forest product industry. He is the editor of RISI's Monthly Economic Commentary and the Economic Outlook chapters that appear in all RISI forecasts. Prior to joining RISI, David had been working at IHS Global Insight as an economist in the Country Analysis and Forecasting Group, as well as consulting for the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, a think-tank in Cambridge, MA. David worked for more than a decade in the financial industry as a trader for boutique hedge funds and brokerages in New York and Boston. He also co-founded ProSeed Capital Holdings, an international venture capital company, serving as its CFO and VP of US Operations. David received his MBA in International Economic Policy from Brandeis International Business School, and his B.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago.

    Hannah Zhao

    Hannah Zhao Joined RISI in 2009 as an economist. Her responsibilities at RISI are focused on the area of world recovered paper and Chinese pulp market. She is in the process of taking over responsibilities of recovered paper analysis of RISI. She contributes to the monthly commentary, quarterly forecast and long-term forecast on the world recovered paper market.

    Hannah holds a Master of Science degree in Resource Economics from University of Rhode Island, and her Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from Beijing Normal University, China.

    Orifjon Abidov started his career at RISI in 2007 as a Research analyst for European forecasting group. He is in the process of taking over responsibilities of European paper packaging analysis of RISI. He contributes to detailed monthly and quarterly analysis and forecasts of the European paper packaging markets. Orifjon holds Master of Science degree in Applied Economics from Brussels University and Bachelor of International Business from Tashkent University of Economics.
