Renata Mercante

Renata Mercante joined RISI as Editor of PPI Latin America in September 2006. She works in RISI’s São Paulo office and covers news, prices and market developments in the Latin American pulp and paper sector.

Renata joined RISI from ABTCP, the Brazilian pulp and paper technical association, where she spent five years covering the Latin American pulp and paper market. In her role as Editorial Coordinator at ABTCP, Renata was responsible for putting together the editorial for O Papel and Nosso Papel magazines as well as preparing the news for the association's website and co-ordinating their Buyers Guide publication.

Renata has interviewed many of the CEOs at the leading pulp and paper companies and visited many mills in Brazil and other Latin American countries. She speaks fluent Portuguese, English and Spanish and has a working knowledge of Italian and French. She holds a degree in journalism and communications from the Casper Líbero University in São Paulo and also in law at Ibirapuera University in São Paulo.

Patrícia Capo is a journalist with specialization in Corporate Communications, Economics & Business and Scientific Journalism from Fundação Cásper Líbero-SP. She is Chief Editor of the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Technical Association's (ABTCP's) Publications, as well as Coordinator of Corporate Communications, having also edited for ABTCP historical-cultural and technical books on the pulp and paper sector. Patrícia has worked in the paper sector for 16 years, in addition to also specializing in the business management and engineering sectors. In 2008, she presented the lecture 'Sustainability of Communications in the Sector, having won the Communicator of the Year award at the 2008 Wood Congress for her professional contribution towards divulging and developing Brazil's pulp and paper industry.

Prior joining APP, Mr. Zheng over 20 years working experience in Information technology, management consultancy and professional services with European and American companies, lastly he was a vice president with the management consulting company Cap Gemini Ernst & Young (now Cap Gemini).

Mr. Zheng joined Asia Pulp & Paper China in August 2003. Mr. Zheng firstly hold the position as Corporate Chief Information Officer for APP China (2003-begin 2006), and then heads the corporate marketing & strategy planning from begin 2006 till begin 2008, before become the head of chairman’s office of APP China in 2008.

With broad experience in negotiations with the international and governmental spheres, besides a thorough knowledge of the Mercosur, Elizabeth de Carvalhaes took over the executive presidency of the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association - Bracelpa in September 2007.
 
Her main objectives at the head of the Association are to communicate the good practices of the pulp and paper companies in the national and international areas, strengthen the sector’s image in the international sphere, and to debate with the public authorities and the National Congress themes of concern to the industry. Furthermore, she will represent the sector in the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization – FAO and at the International Council of Forest & Paper Associations (ICFPA).

Elizabeth de Carvalhaes began her professional career at Volkswagen do Brasil, in 1981, in the exports area, and went on to take part in the company’s international negotiations. Among other positions, she was appointed Director of Government Affairs in 1997.

The following year, she took over the Vice-Presidency of the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) and was active in the negotiations of trade agreements with the Mercosur, as well as with Chile, Mexico, South Africa and India, among other countries, over a ten-year period (1998-2007). She also took part in the Doha Round negotiations.

A native of Rio de Janeiro, 54 years old, Elizabeth de Carvalhaes is a graduate of the University of São Paulo (USP) in Languages – Portuguese and German – and of the University of Vienna, in Austria, in Translation and Interpretation. She is also fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Steve Young is president of the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC), an international trade association representing the independent sector of the corrugated packaging industry. Young has been with the Association just over 25 years and has served as president/chief executive for 13 years, since August of 1995. Before that he was AICC's Administrative Director. During his tenure, AICC's regular and associate membership has topped 1,000 companies in US, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom as well as members in Peru, Guatemala, Germany and Australia.

During the past decade, AICC has greatly increased its participation in the Latin American corrugated industry. The Association and its leadership are regular participants in meetings of ACCCSA, the Association of Corrugators for the Caribbean, Central and South America. In addition, AICC established a region in Mexico in the year 2000, expanding its representation of independent converters to the entire North American continent. He and AICC are also active members of the International Corrugated Case Association (ICCA). Young is also a member of the board of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF), a 501c3 founded by AICC in 1985 to develop corrugated packaging curriculum in the country's leading packaging schools. He is a graduate of the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, and lives in Alexandria, Va.

Born in Valparaiso, Chile on April 15, 1958. Mechanical Engineer and specialist in depth-diving of the Naval Polytechnic Academy. He has received training and studied technical matters in England and also strategy and logistics in Chile. He has also completed a diploma in administration and finance. After 22 years of service in the Chilean Navy he has accomplished different jobs in private companies. He has been part of the paper industry during the last 15 years, starting in logistics and supply and since 1999 by means of his own company Logistica Internacional S.A., supplying paper and playing an important role in corrugated market in Chile as well as presence in several countries in South America. The same year he creates the company Papermarket Chile S.A. and the network of information and business Portals Papermarket, pioneer of this industry in Latin America and a source of information for the industry and media. Through Papermarket he has participated in projects and programs to promote exports and official missions of the Chilean Government related to the paper industry.

Eduardo Landin has been CEO of Zucamor Group in Argentina since 2006 and has 25 years of experience in the packaging industry. Zucamor Group is the biggest Argentinean containerboard producer and a leading manufacturer of corrugated packaging and multiwall paper sacks.

Prior to joining Zucamor Mr. Landin was CEO of Vitopel, a leading multinational producer of Bi-oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) with plants in Argentina and Brazil.

In addition to his experience at Vitopel, Mr. Landin held various positions within the Packaging Division of Arcor Group in Argentina, Brazil and Chile.

Mr. Landin received a degree in Business Administration from Universidad Nacional de Cordoba and has participated in several courses, conferences and seminars in Argentina and overseas.

He is married and has 3 children.

Before joining ANDI, Magdalena worked for five years in various government posts. These included workings as an assistant to the Minister at the Ministry of Mining and Energy; as an industry director in the Ministry of Development (now the Ministry of Industrial Commerce and Tourism) and as advisor at Incomex (now part of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism).

Carlos Aguiar was born in Sobral – in the Northeastern Brazilian State of Ceará – Brazil.

Carlos graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and Industrial Management from the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil. In addition, Mr. Aguiar has attended “Manufacturing in Corporate Strategy” by Harvard University – USA, “Management Development Programme – by Chelwood – UK and “Environmental Management in the Pulp and Paper Industry” by UNEP - United Nations Environment Programme - USA. Aguiar began his career in the Pulp and Paper Industry at a company based in the South of Brazil, in 1970. He joined Aracruz Celulose in 1981, and his professional ascension took place in parallel with the Company´s production capacity increase. Carlos has held various management positions with Aracruz, since then. In 1985 he became an Officer of the Company. In 1993 he was named Vice President and was in charge of Industrial and Forestry Operations. In 1998, he was appointed President and CEO of the Company. On sept. 1st, Aguiar was named President & CEO of FIBRIA.

    Scott Howard

    Scott Howard has worked for RISI's Macroeconomic Service for three years. He is the editor of RISI's Monthly Economic Commentary and the Economic Outlook chapters that appear in all RISI forecasts. In addition, Scott has contributed to a variety of multi-client studies and consulting projects and has spoken at RISI conferences in North America, Latin America, and Asia. His primary responsibility is collecting, analyzing, forecasting, and communicating macroeconomic data and its relevance to clients throughout the forest product industry. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.  Scott currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts.

    Robert (Bob) Flynn is Director, International Timber for RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry. Mr. Flynn has more than 30 years experience in the forest industry, including 9 years as a forester for Champion International in Oregon. He has spent the past 20+ years as a consultant to the industry, with a focus on analysis of timber supply and demand trends outside of North America; international trade of logs, woodchips, and biomass; and trends in international timberland investment. He joined RISI in April 2006, and has published two reports on China’s timber supply and demand; a global comparison of planted forest economics and investment attractiveness for tree farm development; a profile of India’s forest products industry; an analysis of the impact of Russia's log export tax on Asian log markets; annual reports on international trade in woodchips and biomass; and most recently he published a report on South American plantation forestry and bioenergy markets. He holds a BA degree in geography from the University of Texas, a BS degree in forest management from Northern Arizona University and an MS in economics from the University of Oregon.

    Rod Yong

    Rod Young started modeling and forecasting in the pulp and paper industry in 1977. Since then, his work in international pulp and paper markets has received worldwide recognition.

    In March 2005, he became President and CEO of Paperloop, which was later renamed RISI in 2006. Rod Young has remained an active contributor to RISI's forecasts since stepping down as RISI's CEO and being named Chairman in 2007. Rod, a founding member of RISI, has 32 years of experience tracking and reporting on the global pulp and paper markets. In 2009, Rod took on responsibility for ensuring that all RISI's economic analysis meets or exceeds the industry's expectation for excellence and accuracy when he took on the role of RISI’s Chief Economic Advisor.

    Rod received a Master of Science degree in Forestry Economics from Virginia Polytechnical Institute in 1977 and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from Michigan State University.

    Luis is the account manager at RISI and is in charge of Latin America. He has more than 7 years of working experience in multinational companies in the following departments: Marketing, Planning, Market Intelligence and Sales. Responsible for the development of sales/industrial interface, focusing on the creation of performance indicators.

    Strong emphasis on the implementation of Business Intelligence - management of competitive market intelligence, which entailed research and elaboration and analysis of information focusing on marketing actions, investments/expansions decisions, and support to tactical and strategic decisions made by c-level management. Luis completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Estado de Minas Gerais.

    Patricia Perez has worked for RISI for three years. Working as Economist at RISI's office in São Paulo, she is responsible for gathering information and providing analysis on the Latin American pulp and paper industry. She also coordinates the elaboration of the "Latin American Pulp and Paper Forecast". Patricia comes to RISI from the University of São Paulo where she earned her Bachelors degree in Economics and served as a market analyst for the pulp and paper industry at the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (CEPEA).

    Sampo Timonen

    Sampo Timonen joined RISI in 2008 as the Director of European Graphic Paper. He is one of Europe's leading Pulp and Paper industry analysts with nearly a decade of industry-specific expertise.

    Prior to joining RISI, Timonen served as Equity Analyst at Handelsbanken AB, heading up their pulp and paper research.  At Handelsbanken, Timonen’s coverage of companies included UPM, Stora Enso, M-real, Norske Skog, Holmen, Ahlstrom and their international peer companies.   Before Handelsbanken, he worked as Equity Analyst at Glitnir Bank (FIM Group) for three years.  There, he analyzed Pöyry, Kemira and Ruukki Group in addition to those companies mentioned earlier.  Previous to Glitnir Bank, Timonen was Research Manager at Oy Keskuslaboratorio Ab (KCL). Responsibilities included project management of Future Watch, a forest industry trend-spotting and SWOT analysis program.  Prior to KCL, Timonen served as Market Analyst at Myllykoski Paper Oy, forecasting demand and prices of newsprint, SC and LWC papers. He began his career in 1999 at M-real Kirkniemi mills and M-real (Board Division).

    Timonen's analysis is now featured in RISI's European Graphic Paper Forecast, Paper Trader Europe and various Viewpoints and features on RISI's main website. 


    Ken Waghorne

    Ken Waghorne

    Ken has specialized in the paper packaging markets for RISI since 1983. He provides detailed monthly and quarterly analysis and forecasts of the North American paper packaging markets as well as single- and multi-client studies. His contributions to the RISI multiclient studies include the detailed analysis of the international containerboard markets, sector-by-sector forecasts for the U.S. folding carton industry, and an analysis of the paper packaging markets for Latin America.

    Ken holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Economics from Virginia Tech and his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from LSU.

    Kurt Schaefer

    Kurt’s responsibilities at RISI are focused on the area of wood pulp. He publishes a monthly commentary and forecast on the world pulp market, World Pulp Monthly. He also produces to RISI’s long-term pulp forecasts, focusing on variables such as pulp consumption, capacity, production, production costs, and pricing.  Just prior to joining RISI, Kurt was Director of Pulp & Paper Forecaster. As the sole economist working on Forecaster, he was responsible for forecasting prices and market conditions across all of the major grades of paper and paperboard in North America.  His work on Forecaster included developing detailed end-user driven demand models for the key grades, including newsprint, coated papers, and containerboard.  He also directed a number of editorial projects, including a major long-term study of global newsprint markets.  He reached ABD status in the Ph.D. program in Economics at the University of Virginia.

    In 1995, he received the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from the Association of Investment Management and Research (AIMR).

    Matt has worked for over 10 years at RISI with a focus on the global pulp and paper industry. He manages commercial activities with RISI clients globally and travels extensively in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He has also led a number of consulting engagements with key clients in Europe and Asia.

    Matt received an MBA from Boston University in 1999.
