Environmental Strategy of the Year Award
Whether we like it or not, pulp and paper production has an impact on the environment. However, it is without doubt one of the most responsible industries and we celebrate this with the Environmental Strategy of the Year Award. The winning company will have gone the extra mile and above the call of duty to devise a company wide strategy that shows clearly all the important areas of action and enhancement it has made at its facilities to address environmental issues.
What the judges are looking for?
~ Evidence of the overall use of certified raw materials (ie: FSC/PEFC).
~ Evidence of reducing emissions into the air.
~ Evidence of reducing emissions into water.
~ Evidence of reducing water consumption.
~ Evidence of reducing use of fossil fuels for energy use.

Innovative Product of the Year Award
The key to success in all business is to be ahead of the game and that means innovation. This award will be presented to the company that has pulled out all the stops and has produced new products that clearly stand out from the more ‘commoditized’ products on the market. The judges will be looking for creativity and inventiveness, but most importantly examples of real live work encompassing those two elements into a vital product for the end user.
What the judges are looking for?
~ Truly innovative products – evidence of why your company's product is an innovation.
~ Evidence of products in action.
~ Customer or end user feedback.Information that will help the judges to decide:
1. What is the product, and what advantages does it bring?
2. How did the innovation come about?
3. Who were the team members involved in the creative process.
4. Tell us about the commercial side, ie: is it a profitable product for the company?

Green Energy and Biofuels Award
This award will go to the company that has shown significant and successful progress in the area of using biomass for the creation of bioenergy and biofuels. This category will also include any 'waste to energy' initiatives. Entries should come from companies who are either already implementing strategies in this area; have embarked on pilot projects; have started an investment; or have project plans that are under consideration. Companies should demonstrate the achievements that they are making in new energy strategies that will impact financial performance and strategy. The judges will be looking for a company that has grabbed this opportunity with both hands and is trailblazing a path where others may follow to capitalize on what will be a very lucrative business area for pulp and paper in the future.
What the judges are looking for?
~ Evidence of a renewable biomass fuel project(s) that is bringing in extra revenue including the export of energy to national grids and/or production of viable biofuels to replace fossil fuels.
~ Evidence of the reduction in the use of fossil fuel at production sites.
~ Evidence of a continuing renewable fuels focussed strategy going forward, including R&D and proposed investments.
~ We are also looking for good clear human examples of how proactive the renewables mission was in relation to the project(s) entered. This will include how proactive was the team involved, levels of creativity implemented and the vision and persistence of the team involved.Information that will help the judges to decide:
1. List the advances your company has made in the field of bioenergy or biofuels over the last three years.
2. Give a brief description of the project(s).
3. Tell us about the financial difference it has made to your production (onsite energy creation).
4. Tell us about the financial difference the creation of bioenergy has made to your financial performance from selling on extra electricity/steam or the impact that it this is projected to have on revenues.

Managing Risk and Safety Award
The last few years in the pulp and paper industry have been witness to calamitous events both of a financial and natural occurrence. The global economic crisis, earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters have had a resounding impact on the industry as a whole. However, risk management covers a lot more than dramatic worldwide events; it covers financial insurance and planning, but also health and safety of personnel, asset protection and preservation, and a multitude of other activities within the industry. And the industry has made major improvements in its property loss prevention, health and safety record in recent years. We are looking for a company that has been truly innovative in its approach to loss prevention and safety and has shown an ability to manage its risk effectively.

Business Strategy of the Year Award
This award will be presented to the pulp or paper company that stands out among all others in devising and implementing a successful strategy for running its business. The winner will be the company that has not only made intelligent investments or divestments, but has addressed the various needs of its customers and markets whether on a global or regional basis, leaving itself in a solid and secure financial footing going forward into the future.

Efficiency Improvements of the Year Award
Maximizing efficiency involves a whole host of different elements at a mill, from the reduction of energy use on paper machines, to the implementation of improved logistics solutions. The Efficiency Improvements of the Year Award goes to the mill that has excelled itself in the area of production and overall mill efficiency. The winner will be the mill that has either by new investments, or business systems, turned around efficiency and transformed its performance in a measurable and transparent way.

Water Efficiency Award
Water has always been an important topic in the pulp and paper sector, but is becoming even more important as the global spotlight falls on possible shortages in the future. The winner of this award will be the mill that has clearly reduced the need for raw water while at the same time demonstrating that – either by the aid of the latest technology, or by working practice – it is maximizing its usage by filtering, re–circulating and reusing its current water consumption.
What the judges are looking for?
~ Evidence of the overall use of certified raw materials (ie: FSC/PEFC).
~ Clear evidence, including before and after scenarios, of reduced raw water usage.
~ Any evidence of investments or projects for the purpose of reducing water use.
~ Evidence of reuse of water by filtering and circulation.
~ Evidence of clean, clear water going back into the river systems.
Information that will help the judges to decide:
1. List any investments the mill has made over the last three years in the area of water management, encompassing raw water procurement, right through the mill including any recirculation equipment and technology and on to waste water treatment.
2. Give a brief description of the challenges encountered.
3. Give a description of what difference it has made to the mill.
4. Provide details of the project team and levels of cooperation involved mill wide.
5. Supply figures that illustrate improvements in the use of water and emissions back into water.
