  • Phil Orme
    Owner, Paper 2 Press
Technical Consultant for Press / Paper Related Concerns

My career spans two industries, the first 25 years were working in the print industry, ranging from book and commercial print, through to high speed national and regional newspaper presses, printing full colour in state of the art print sites. In between, were spells at gravure packaging and transfer print, plus time at a label printers. My long association with newspapers, began at the Express and Stars, sister plant at Telford, in the UK, one of the first offset newspapers in the country in the mid 70's, but also a leader at the time, in UV newspaper colour printing, which ironically, is now being heralded once again as the way forward.

I have been heavily involved in 5 new pressroom start up's, the largest being at 2 Mirror Group Newspaper print sites, in Watford and Oldham, during Robert Maxwell's reign, bringing new technology colour newspapers to the UK print industry on a national scale. I also worked for a brief spell on behalf of the Mirror in Kenya, being part of a team that produced the first colour newspaper copies in that country too. During my time at the Mirror, I was Pressroom Manager at Oldham, before a spell as Print Manager for a new print site in Newcastle on behalf of Thomson Newspapers.

Whilst at Newcastle, my second career began, when I was headhunted to join Abitibi Price a large, global, Canadian paper producer, which through several mergers has now become Abitibi Bowater. I was the Technical Service Manager and subsequently Technical Director of the UK and also covered several countries on the Continent, including Spain, Italy, Turkey and Norway. However, my role, while working closely with the mills, to continually improve, also took me to Japan, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Israel, Egypt, Kuwait, US, Canada, plus several other countries in Europe, not only troubleshooting paper / press related concerns, but pressroom audits when required, to develop and improve pressroom perfomance and savings. At times too, I have been involved in new projects, e.g triple width presses, returnable cores, etc.

Following the closure of the Abitibi Bowater 100% recycled mill in the UK last year, I was made redundant and am now the owner of Paper 2 Press, specialising in helping specifically paper, but also print companies, to improve and troubleshoot concerns.

Married and have two children, plus one grandson. My son lives in Australia, so who knows Paper 2 Press may expand globally too. Interests, Travel, music, wine, most sports.
