John Sanderson
Director, Environmental Market Support
UPM
Since graduating from the University of Wales 23 years ago with a degree in Wood Science & Forestry John has worked exclusively for UPM.
As the frontrunner of the new forest industry, UPM is leading the integration of bio and forest industries into a new, sustainable and innovation-driven future, developing products made of renewable raw materials.
UPM comprises of three Business Groups: Energy and pulp, Paper, and Engineered materials, with sales in 2010 € 8.9 billion. UPM has production plants in 16 countries and employs approximately 22,000 people worldwide.
Early years of John's career were spent in the minimization and control of environmental impacts at UPM Shotton Paper in North Wales, the UK’s largest integrated paper mill. Following a 2 year secondment to Finland carrying out research into waste paper recycling, water treatment, and process efficiency studies at UPM Jamsa River mills, John returned to the UK to take on the role of Head of Sustainable Development for UPMs UK business. This period saw the development of the Shotton mill from its original design as a 100% virgin fibre mill, to its current status as a 100% recycled fibre mill with its own renewable energy generation. The UPM Shotton mill has gone on to be awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in Sustainability.
Increasing environmental focus and concern by UPM's customers has lead to an unprecedented increase in the demand for environmental education, commitment and performance by their suppliers. And hence John's current role as Director of Global Environmental Market Support aims to meet this market interest head on by educating customers and end users about the sustainability credentials of the industry, and specifically UPMs position as a forerunner in this area.
