    Mark Rushton

    Mark Rushton is UK based and has worked in print, pulp and paper for a career spanning 30 years. He has been reporting on the pulp and paper industry for over 10 years and has visited mills and companies across the globe. He started on Papermaking and Distribution (PMD), Digital Printer and Print & Paper Monthly. Mark is now the editor of Pulp & Paper International (PPI) magazine and is also responsible for overseeing content on the www.risi.com website and in Pulp & Paper International (PPI) China magazine. Mark is also the chairman of the PPI Awards judging panel and regularly interviews the leading CEOs in the pulp and paper industry. Mark holds a City and Guilds in Printing and Allied Trades.

  • Bernard de Galembert

    Bernard de Galembert

    Born in 1966, Bernard de Galembert holds a Degree in Economics, with a specialisation in European Affairs.

    From 1991 to 1994, he worked as Chief Economic Adviser to the Confederation of European Sugar Manufacturers (CEFS). He wrote two books on EU subsidies and programmes in favour of companies.

    From 1994 to 1996, he joined the European Farmers´ Union (COPA-COGECA) where, amongst other things, he was in charge of setting up and managing the Working Group on Forestry.

    In 1996, he was as the President´s Adviser of the French Landowners´ Federation (FNPA). On the same year, he became Director General of a monthly trade magazine. He was later appointed Chief Policy Adviser of the European Landowners´ Organisation (ELO) in 1997.

    He joined CEPI as Forest Director in 2002. His competencies cover international (United Nations Forum on Forests, etc.) and European (Forest Europe, European Forestry Strategy, etc.) processes related to forestry, as well as policy areas such as wood supply for the European Paper Industry, certification of sustainable forestry, illegal logging, renewable energy sources, climate and forests, water and forests, etc. In parallel, he is actively involved in the global forest and paper organisation ICFPA (International Council of Forest and Paper Associations)

    Bernard de Galembert also dedicates part of his time in CEPI as Research & Innovation Director and as Social Affairs Director.

    James Atkins

    James founded Vertis in 1998 and from 2001 focussed the business on carbon finance and emissions trading. Under his guidance, Vertis has pioneered emissions trading in Central and Eastern Europe. Most recently James has been responsible for product development with a focus on helping clients across Europe with risk management in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. Previously, James was a manager in the corporate finance group at Deloitte & Touche Central Europe and worked for Arthur Andersen and Waste Management International PLC in the UK and Germany. He graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Modern Languages and is a UK Chartered Accountant. He is also the author of Climate Change for Football Fans, a humorous but serious book on climate change policy, and a related blog, The Bustard.

    Seth Walker

    Seth Walker is an Associate Bioenergy Economist at RISI, he joined RISI in 2010. Seth's responsibilities include RISI's North American Bioenergy Forecast and Bioenergy Service quarterly reports. Seth has also developed and initiated the RISI and PFI Pellet Manufacturing Survey, the first of its kind in North America. As a consultant at RISI, he has conducted fiber supply and site selection studies for the forest products and bioenergy industries. Seth also covers timber market pricing in the US South and Pacific Northwest with RISI's Timber Transaction Price Service and Log Lines delivered log price report.

    He holds a Bachelor of Science in Resource Economics and Commerce from the University of Rhode Island and Master of Science in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, also from URI.

    Tuomas Mustonen

    Mr. Tuomas Mustonen, currently working as Vice President – Business Solutions, is responsible for the Chemical industry business area at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. He is specialized in development of knowledge intensive R&D services, innovation in networks, R&D outsourcing and commercialization of technology based innovations. Tuomas has worked in past in various business development roles at VTT and Finnish packaging industry. He has a MBA degree in International finance from the Aalto University and M.Sc. degree in Industrial physics from the University of Jyväskylä. His particular technological interest areas include biomaterials, biochemicals, biopolymers, packaging applications and sustainable chemistry. Lately, Tuomas has been focusing on increase of international network and service business of VTT.

    Clive Suckling

    A professionally qualified senior executive with over 35 year´s international business experience. A proven leader with considerable experience of strategy, business development, and cross-cultural management.

    After a long and varied career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), he has since 2012 been leveraging his in-depth knowledge of the forestry and forest products industries, solid governance experience and financial expertise to provide independent advice on sustainable investment issues and strategies in those sectors.

    In his most recent role at PwC, he led their Global Forest, Paper & Packaging (FPP) industry practice, with revenues of around $300mn and more than 1,500 sector specialists.

    His background is as an advisor on M&A and capital markets transactions for more than 25 years. Through his long time focus on the Scandinavian market and earlier responsibility for developing PwC’s business in Scandinavia, he has worked with many of the world´s leading forest products companies. He has also advised other corporates as well as financial investors on investment strategies into forestry and forest products.

    His high profile in the FPP sector has made him a regular speaker on industry trends at conferences and events across the world and he has authored many published pieces on industry developments.

    Graeme Rodden

    A native of Montreal, Graeme started covering the forest products industry as an Assistant Editor with Pulp & Paper Canada magazine in 1980, serving as Editor from 1994-2001. He then joined RISI in 2001, moving to Belgium to become Editor of PPI. When RISI acquired the publishing rights to the IFPTA Journal in 2007, he also assumed the duties of Editor of the Journal.

    Now based in Nova Scotia, Canada, Graeme continues as Editor of the Journal as well as Executive Editor of PPI. Over the years, Graeme has visited more than 200 pulp and paper mills worldwide and attended countless forest products industry events and conferences.

    Processum Biorefinery Initiative AB

    Clas Engström, CEO of Processum Biorefinery Initiative AB in Sweden and in charge of the growth initiative Biorefinery of the Future, supported by the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems. Mr Engström leads the work on research and development in this biorefinery cluster in northern Sweden. Processum is owned by 21 member companies, which are cooperating to develop new products and processes using biomass as a base. Research and development on green chemicals and materials, biofuels, dissolving cellulose and viscose are important parts of the work.

    Engström has previously worked at Mid Sweden University as manager for the Digital Printing Centre being responsible for the development of papers for digital printing technologies. He has also worked in the Swedish industrial department dealing with SME matters as well as at EuroFutures consultancy.

    Jukka Kantola

    Jukka has broad experience of the forestry sector. He has held executive positions in the industry in both Europe and Asia, including working for a western company operating in the Asian market and representing an Asian company in its operations in Europe. Hence he has a strong understanding of the challenges on both sides. Jukka is well networked in the sector and has a good grasp of the new and emerging applications for wood.

    He has recently established NISCluster Ltd, a new enterprise focused on the biomass and bio-refining sector, to facilitate the versatile use of wood biomass. Jukka is a great advocate of the bio-economy and is tenaciously facilitating new and old biomass solutions.

    Jukka holds a Master of Science degree from the Technical University of Helsinki (today known as the Aalto University). He also holds an eMBA from the Rutgers University. He is married with three sons.

    Sari Mannonen

    Sari Mannonen is Director, Business Relations & Marketing for UPM Biofuels based in Helsinki, Finland. Representing and promoting the business she is responsible for defining and leading UPM Biofuels international activities. Her main contact groups are technology suppliers in biofuels sector, investors, reporters, EU and national decision makers, NGOs and financial audiences. Sari has over 15 years´ experience in leading global sales & marketing, customer management, customer strategy & business relations as well as business development in different global businesses. Sari graduated from Helsinki University and holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry. Sari´s background also includes research and development in biotech field.

    Marita Niemela

    Docent Dr. Marita Niemelä has 25 years of experience in industrial sectors ranging from oil refining and chemical industry to forest industry. She has broad insight and track record in in energy, fuels and industrial chemicals with specialization in catalytic processes. Her recent focus has been in new technologies mainly in the areas of bioenergy, biofuels and biorefining.

    Marita Niemelä joined Metso Pulp, Paper and Power (PPP) in November 2012 as a Vice President Bio-Technologies. She leads the Metso PPP bio-technology strategy development and secures its implementation in co-operation with Business lines and Area organizations.

    Prior to this appointment, Marita Niemelä worked at Pöyry as a Leading Advisor in Biofuels and Biorefining in Management Consulting from 2010-2012 and as a Vice President Biofuels and Biorefining in the Business Area Chemical Industry from 2007 to 2010. She has several years of experience in R&D&D in various positions such as Director Chemicals in Avantium Technologies B.V., Team Leader at VTT, and Adjunct Professor in Industrial Chemistry at Aalto University. She was appointed to an honorary position of a Docent in the area of Catalysis in Biofuels and Biorefining in 2012.

    Kari joined Honeywell in 2007 and he is based at Honeywell Finland, Espoo.

    He has held multiple positions in Honeywell and is currently working as a Biofuels Business Leader with responsibility for EMEA region (Europe, Middle East & Africa).

    Kari has worked his entire professional career in the forest industry ecosystem, covering responsibilities for business consulting, supply chain management, R&D, biomass logistics & quality, corporate ICT and software sales. His previous employers have been M-real Oyj and SAP AG.

    Kari holds a M.Sc. and Doctoral degree in forest sciences from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
