New RISI report analyzes global tree farm resources and profitability

BEDFORD, Mass., November 28, 2006 (Press Release) - RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry, today announced the upcoming publication of a new edition of the Global Tree Farm and Managed Forest Industry study. The report will help organizations identify which countries have the best long-term potential for managed forest or tree farm investment and industry development by providing data on growing and harvesting costs, as well as expected yields for planted forests in many countries on a comparable basis.

Robert Flynn, study co-author and RISI director of international timber, commented, "Tree farms are increasingly being viewed as the key wood supply resource of the future. Not surprisingly, a growing number of players in the timber industry are looking at developing tree farms, often in new regions and with relatively unproven species. This report has been revised and expanded from the 2003 edition, making it a valuable strategic planning tool for senior management and business analysts at any organization involved in or looking to get involved in this continually expanding industry".

The report, published in previous editions by DANA Limited, an international forest industry advisory and publishing firm based in New Zealand was acquired by RISI earlier this year. Dennis Neilson, director and founder of DANA Limited, has continued to lend his expertise to the study as key contributor.

The report features:

  • Data on growing costs and stumpage revenues, as well as expected yields for planted-managed forests in many countries on a comparable basis

  • An overview of native forest and plantation forest resources in each covered country

  • Identification of major forest owners in each country

  • Investment attractiveness ratings and rankings for each country based on a series of economic, financial, political and biological criteria.

The data and analysis in this new study will help organizations answer the following strategic questions:

  • Where and with what species can I expect the best investment returns?

  • In what regions will I find low growing costs without facing undue risk?

  • How can I justify my investment decisions to my stakeholders?

  • What are the trends in long-term competitiveness of the forest industry in different countries?

The Global Tree Farm and Managed Forest Industry study is slated for publication in December 2006. A complete prospectus can be found at http://www.risiinfo.com/risi-store/do/product/detail?id=10543&pcId=30&parentId=&rootId=13
