Lecta’s Torraspapel mulls closure of its Sarrià de Ter specialty paper mill in Spain

BRUSSELS , May 8, 2014 (RISI) -

Spain's Torraspapel might close its Sarrià de Ter specialty paper mill for good. The firm, which along with Cartiere del Garda in Italy and Condat in France forms part of the Lecta group, confirmed that it has started a dialogue process with workers' representatives to "evaluate the feasibility or closure of its plant in Sarrià de Ter (Girona) and the possible relocation of its production to other Torraspapel sites in Spain."

The firm ascribed the move to the difficult situation in the paper industry, with a permanent drop in demand and no recovery foreseen in the short or medium term. Moreover, Toraspapel said that the Sarrià de Ter site has been affected by declining sales as well as high unit production costs and transportation charges and by the impact of changes in the legislative framework for the electricity industry in recent years.
