Producers are striving to push prices for coated woodfree (CWF) paper higher in the major western European markets. While some report partial success, a somewhat weak market coupled with overcapacity and resistance among buyers is complicating matters for papermakers.
After a small price increase in summer last year, CWF prices slipped during autumn. Sellers then began talking of a price increase during the first quarter this year. Sappi Fine Paper Europe, for example, announced it would raise prices for graphic paper, including CWF paper, during January, without specifying by how much. Several other suppliers independently announced their intention to increase prices as well at various dates in January or February.
