The Russian Forest Industry Sector Review, 2007 Edition is written by Runar Gareyev and Dennis Neilson, and published by DANA Publishing. The 2007 Review is the 2nd edition. DANA published its first Review of the Russian Forest Industry Sector in late 1997. At that time, and especially a year later in 1998, Russia was in very bad economic shape. The country was not long out of the Soviet era, and much of it was still being run on Soviet principles. After the Government defaulted on rouble- denominated debt In 1998, global financial markets (prematurely) wrote off Russia as being a credible economic force in the foreseeable future. Well, what a difference a decade makes! Russia is now a political and economic powerhouse. What has not changed in the last decade, however, is the fact that Russia holds more than 20% of the world's timber resource, which is more than Canada and Brazil, combined. New Russian policies are set to radically change the landscape of much of the global forest industry, especially in Scandinavia and Western Europe, and in Asia.
