That's an old engineering saying that still holds true, especially when papermakers are trying to figure out the causes of sheet flaws and associated web breaks. A clear view of the initial problem is a vital first step. After that, defining and solving the root of the trouble becomes a lot easier.

ABB introduces new Weight xP extended profiling actuators

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently introduced the new Weight xP extended profiling actuators. In bark boilers, the bark is burned along with other waste wood products to produce steam that is used in the pulping process, to drive the paper machine, and for many other uses. After combustion, the flue gases from the boilers are often passed through an electrostatic precipitator that uses static electricity to gather the fly ash, much as a TV set collects dust on the screen. An electrostatic charge is induced in the flowing particles and then the particles are collected onto the energized plates with a negative voltage through electrostatic attraction. The negative voltage on the collector plates can be several thousand volts and there is some potential for electrical arcing inside the precipitator. If a combustible gas mixture is allowed to flow through the unit, the result can be an explosion. This article will describe a best practice methodology for greatly reducing the chance of an explosion in bark or recovery boilers, a practice recently put into effect at two major paper mills in Brazil.

Standard Register restructuring expected to save the company about $45M in annual cost savings, to eliminate 12-15% of its workforce

Standard Register, a leader in the management and execution of mission-critical communications, today announced a strategic restructuring program to better align the Company's resources in support of its growing core solutions business and to reduce costs to offset the impact of declining revenue in its legacy operations. The restructuring is expected to result in an estimated $45 million in annual savings and the elimination of 12% to 15% of its workforce over the next 6 to 9 months. Costs associated with the restructuring program are expected to reduce fourth quarter 2011 earnings by approximately $5.5 million, or $0.11 per share, net of tax. The balance of the costs will reduce 2012 earnings by approximately $1.5 million, or $0.03 per share, net of tax.

Metso receives significant automation orders from Chinese small and mid-size boardmakers

Recently, Metso has received several significant automation orders from Chinese small- and mid-size boardmakers, for example from Hangzhou Dongda Paper Co., Ltd and Quzhou Wuzhou Special Paper Co., Ltd.
