As a result of a combination of a lightning strike at the mill and equipment and execution issues, the shutdown, which was planned for 11 days, took 15 days instead. Further, the start-up of the mill was slower than budgeted. The shutdown and slower start-up resulted in a loss of approximately 30,300 ADMTs of NBSK pulp production (of which approximately 14,300 ADMTs was unplanned) and a consequential loss of energy production. Mercer currently estimates that the Celgar mill's shutdown will have an overall negative impact of approximately EURO11 million to its operating income in its second quarter of 2013 results, compared to its first quarter 2013 results.

Steinbeis Papier upgrades to Voith LowEnergyFlotation technology in Glückstadt, Germany

At Steinbeis Papier GmbH in Glückstadt, Germany, the existing AP3 primary flotation system was upgraded to Voith LowEnergyFlotation (LEF) Technology at the end of 2012. Thanks to the rebuild, energy savings of 37% could be achieved at the flotation pumps, while flotation quality remained constant regarding the degree of whiteness, dirt specks and fiber loss.
In the course of the rebuild to LEF technology, the flotation cell injectors and the flotation pumps were improved in terms of hydrodynamics and dimensioned for optimum efficiency. The existing injectors were replaced by LEF injectors, and the flotation pumps were equipped with new LEF impellers. Contractually agreed measurements of the energy consumption before and after the rebuild confirmed the energy savings promised by Voith, which was also documented in a report.
The rebuild is part of an extensive, ambitious energy efficiency program of Steinbeis Papier GmbH. "As a sustainable company in the recycled paper industry, we want to take full advantage of all production possibilities to reduce energy consumption," says Dr. Michael Hunold, Production Manager at Steinbeis Papier GmbH.
Voith Paper is a division of the Voith Group and the leading partner to and pioneer in the paper industry. Through constant innovations, Voith Paper is optimizing the paper manufacturing process, focusing on developing resource-saving products to reduce the use of energy, water, and fibers.
Voith sets standards in the markets energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials and transportation & automotive. Founded in 1867, Voith employs almost 42,000 people, generates € 5.7 billion in sales, operates in about 50 countries around the world and is today one of the biggest family-owned companies in Europe.

Considerable investment has been made to ensure the Koehler group's long-term competitiveness and to secure the future of the Oberkirch site. Over the next three years, approximately 35 million Euros will be spent at Oberkirch for the rebuild of PM 5, a machine used mainly for the production of carbonless and fine paper grades.
Koehler has awarded Bellmer the order for a TURBOBladeJetterTM headbox with TUR-BOConeTM cross-flow distributor and TURBODiluterTM dilution water control.
The cone-shaped TURBOConeTM features equal distribution of stock flow across the en-tire inlet width of the headbox. The cross-flow distributor works automatically within the design limits of the headbox and requires neither technical monitoring nor supervision. The dilution water control TURBODiluterTM enables optimal control and correction of the CD profile, while the hydraulic BladeJetter ensures an even CD profile and first-class paper sheet formation. The diffuser design, which is adapted according to each particular production scenario, ensures the break-up of macro flocculation. The flexible TUR-BOBladesTM allow for an optimum mixing ratio throughout the headbox.

Bellmer, established in 1842: Erfurt & Sohn as well as Bellmer are family-owned companies whose quality products "made in Germany" have an excellent international reputation. Both our companies had good reason to celebrate in 2012: Erfurt & Sohn celebrated its 185th and Bellmer its 170th anniversary.
Their long-term business relationship was refreshed and continued earlier this year when Erfurt & Sohn awarded Bellmer the order for the rebuild of their dryer section (pre/ and post dryer section) of PM 5.
Target of the rebuild was on the one hand the improvement of quality and on the other hand the increase of the machine speed.
The scope of supply includes parts of the dry wire system, 8 automatic dry wire tensioners, parts for the paper web guiding system and 70 dry wire guide rolls which will be manufactured in the new Bellmer Works 3 featuring a working area of 5,000 sqm. Since end of 2012, the up-to-date roll division has been located there.
Rolls, the core of paper machines, can there be produced even faster and more cost-efficient. Also frame parts for the dryer section will be provided by Bellmer. Furthermore, Bellmer has assumed the tasks of disassembling and remounting the pre/ and post dryer section. Startup and training of the customer's personnel form also part of the order.

The aim of PTS was to standardize the automation system built up over the years by different providers and to bring it up to the latest technical state-of-the-art. With the automation from Voith, the system is now not just modernized, but can also cater for the unusual machine settings that are often required on test machines. All components needed were supplied from a single source. The required uniformity was thus ensured.
The pilot coating machine now has a new machine control, a new drive control and a new quality control system with two scanners. Visualization, operation and control take place on a PCS7 platform. The current system provides extensive flexibility and ideally supports the varied and special customer or test requirements on the pilot machine.
The test coating machine of PTS offers a wide range of test arrangements for all paper grades in a basis weight range of 16 to 600 g/m² and at operating speeds of up to 2,500 m/min.

The start-up of the rebuilt machine is scheduled for the last quarter of 2013.

ABB to supply new paper quality control system for LWC4 production line at SCA Ortviken mill in Sweden

ABB, the leading power and automation group, has won an order for upgrading the paper quality control system of the production line LWC4 at the SCA Ortviken paper mill in Sweden. The project scope includes a number of new functions and measurement scanners for the paper quality control process as well as integration of the new functions in the existing operator environment. The upgrading project represents the final step of integrating the entire control in one single operator environment in the paper line.
The new quality control system, System 800xA QCS with six operator stations, will be integrated in a virtualized server as well as in the existing operator environment for DCS and drive systems. SCA Ortvikenis one of the first paper mills to use ABB's technology for virtual operator stations, which is a solution that offers many benefits including lower system maintenance and energy use since fewer hardware units are needed to do the work that previously required one computer for each operator.
The order also includes replacement of the older measurement scanners with theNetwork Platform
including the latest technology such as the moisture measurements meter HPIR and the optical thickness meter Optical Caliper. Multivariable CD Control(MCD)is used for profile control, which enablescontrol decisionsbased on the most important paper quality aspects in every situation. The new system will be commissioned in late May 2013.
SCA Ortviken is one of the largest paper mills in Sweden with four paper machines and an annual output of 510,000 ton LWC and 380,000 tonnes of un-coated paper.
