(Press Release) -
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has received a New Construction Certification of three Green Globes® for the build-out of their seventh-floor office space at 1101 K Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
The Green Globes rating system is an online program for green building certification that utilizes third-party assessors with expertise in green building design, engineering, construction and facility operations. The system uses a protocol that comprehensively evaluates environmental impacts on a 1,000-point scale in multiple categories: Project Management, Site, Energy, Water, Resources, Emissions, and Indoor Environment.
Buildings or spaces that achieve 35 percent or more of the possible 1,000 points in the rating system are eligible for a certification of one to four Green Globes. The AF&PA office achieved a score of 664 out of 929 available points for a score of 71 percent, the equivalent of three Green Globes.
"We are honored and proud to be recognized by Green Globes for our dedication to sustainability," said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. "AF&PA has a long-standing commitment to sustainable business practices, and we take great pride in carefully planning the details of our new offices to support a quality work environment for our employees through sustainable practices."
Three Green Globes demonstrates leadership in applying best practices regarding energy, water, and environmental efficiency. AF&PA space features include extensive use of daylighting, energy-efficient lighting and mechanical systems, low-emitting paints, coatings, adhesives and flooring, and the incorporation of wood and paper design elements.
AF&PA's record on sustainability is far reaching and a direct result of the commitment of its members. AF&PA member companies adhere to Environmental Health and Safety reporting that contributes to the association's biennial Sustainability Report, which in 2012 showed that the U.S. pulp, paper, packaging and wood products manufacturing industry has made significant, measurable progress toward achieving the goals of its Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability initiative. AF&PA will release its next report in mid-2014.
