In the immortal words of American baseball player and philosopher, Yogi Berra, it's like "déjà vu all over again". For the umpteenth consecutive year, in spite of or perhaps due to, the restructurings of International Paper, it still holds the Number 1 position in terms of pulp, paper, converting and merchanting operations with 2008 sales reaching $24.78 billion, a 15.8% jump over its 2007 figure of $21.40 billion. This is $10.9 billion more than the second ranked company.

Perhaps it's a sign of the times that the top 10 companies remained unchanged although Stora Enso and Procter & Gamble (P&G) swapped places with P&G climbing into second spot.
Sequana Capital, headquartered in Paris, made a big move, all the way to Number 11 from 18 thanks to its acquisitions of Dalum Papir and Map in 2007. Despite all its troubles, AbitibiBowater made a big jump up the table to Number 14 in sales from 24, reflective of the combined operations of Bowater and Abitibi-Consolidated being counted as one entity in 2008. However, at the top end of the table, the real mover was NewPage, which, thanks to its acquisition of Stora Enso's North American assets took over AbitibiBowater's Number 24 spot after occupying 37th place in 2008.

Clearwater Paper of Spokane, WA, makes its debut in the rankings at 65th place. However, Clearwater is the name of the company formed when Potlatch divested its pulp and paper assets.
As noted, in terms of specific companies, not much has changed over the last year. Even when comparing the Top 100 by corporate size, this sense of déjà vu pervades. For 2008 sales (pulp, paper, converting and merchanting), for the top 30 companies, the total was about $230 billion versus $214 billion in 2007. At the bottom end of the table, the companies from 71 to 100 in the rankings had sales of just over $23 billion in 2008 compared with close to $21 billion in 2007.

Overall, sales totaled $322.76 billion in 2008 compared with $296.19 billion a year earlier and it seems they were spread evenly through the listings. Although sales were up, paper and board production among the Top 100 companies dropped from 210 million tonnes in 2007 (as reported in last year's PPI September issue) to 199.3 million tonnes in 2008. However, market pulp production went up by just under five million tonnes to 37.2 million tonnes.

Of the 23 Asian companies listed, the Japanese continue to top the tables, holding the top six places as they did last year. The Chinese companies have made their mark on the industry recently. Shandong Chenming continues to be Number 1 among the Chinese, moving into 42nd place overall, up one spot from the 2008 listing. Nine Dragons made a significant gain, moving up 10 places to hold Number 44.

The merger of Aracruz and VCP was not complete by the end of 2008 so each company is listed separately. Next year, if all goes to plan, it will be one company, Fibria, and based on 2008 figures, sales for the company should be more than $3 billion.
The merger will allow room for one of the companies that did not make the cut-off figures for 2008 to be included in the 2010 listing. Some of the smaller companies that could not be listed include: Gascogne, Otor, Kapstone, Shandong Bohui, Yue Yang, Kishu and Lintec.
Every year, the Top 100 aims to be a comprehensive list of the financial fortunes of the global pulp and paper industry. However, there are many companies in the sector that do not make their financial results public. Below is a list of firms that would likely qualify for inclusion if their financials were available. • Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) • APRIL) • Carter Holt Harvey) • Georgia-Pacific ) • Ilim Group ) • Irving) • Kruger) • Parsons & Whittemore) • SAICA) • Visy) • White Birch Paper) As more and more private equity companies buy into the sector, there could be additional companies that are “missing in action” in the future.
