Ilim starts up converting plant in Russia

BRUSSELS, June 20, 2008 (RISI) - Ilim Pulp has started up a new corrugated board plant in Kommunar, northwest Russia, some months ahead of schedule.

The Rouble 1 billion ($42 million) facility, whose equipment was supplied by BHS, Bobst and Martin, will reach a capacity of 140 million m²/yr of corrugated board within two years and employ 360 people.

The 6 ha site is close to St Petersburg. The company chose the location to exploit healthy local demand for corrugated board, which a spokesperson put at about 100 million m²/yr.

The construction and startup of the Kommunar plant is part of Ilim's long-term plan to become a leading supplier of corrugated boxes in the region. Its goal is to produce a quarter of all corrugated boxes in Russia through the creation of five corrugated box plants in the western part of the country within the next five years, with a total output of more than 700 million m²/yr.

How do you see the level of regulation as it applies to your pulp and paper company?
  • There's too much - we are caught up in red tape
  • There's too little - stricter laws would force the industry to invest
  • It's about right - but other regions are too lightly regulated

  • It's not a problem
