M-real delays upgrade at Finnish mill

BRUSSELS, March 14, 2008 (RISI) - M-real has postponed the installation of a new automation system on PM 2 at its Kirkniemi pulp and paper mill in Finland due to power distribution network improvements at the plant. Work is now expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

The firm signed up Metso to carry out the upgrade, and to provide process, machine and quality control systems and profilers for two of the site’s seven supercalenders. Work on supercalenders 2 and 5 has been completed. A distributed control system, quality control system and induction profiling will be installed on supercalender 1 mid-summer, when work will also be carried out on one of the site’s three coating machines.

The Kirkniemi facility produces some 730,000 tonnes/yr of coated papers on its three machines and some 300,000 tonnes/yr of mechanical pulp.
